Shelley Moore Capito is currently serving her fifth term as the representative of the 2nd Congressional District of West Virginia. She is the only Republican and the only woman in the West Virginia congressional delegation. Capito is a committed public servant who prides herself on being approachable and accessible to her constituents.
The bills Capito has introduced and co-sponsored reflect her priorities to improve the quality of life for every West Virginian by creating economic opportunities and accessible, affordable quality health care including prescription drug coverage under Medicare.
One of Capito's main goals is to increase the quality of health care in West Virginia. Throughout her tenure in Congress, Capito has sponsored and supported a number of measures to increase the accessibility and affordability of health care for those throughout the Mountain State, with an added emphasis on health care accessibility in rural areas. Capito utilizes her experience on this issue by serving on the steering committee of the Rural Health Care Caucus, as well as serving as the Co-Chair of the Long Term Care Caucus, which focuses on providing the best in quality health care for our nation’s senior and disabled citizens.
Capito is proud to have helped bring real prescription drug relief to seniors. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert named Congresswoman Capito as the Vice Co-Chairwoman of the House Prescription Drug Task Force in the 107th and 108th Congresses because of her leadership on this issue. Capito also was a co-sponsor of the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit that was signed into law on December 9, 2003. Thanks in part to this law, an overwhelming majority of seniors in West Virginia now have prescription drug coverage.
The congresswoman has traveled to Afghanistan and Iraq where she was able to meet with U.S. troops fighting the War on Terror and review rebuilding efforts in both countries.
Capito is dedicated to creating jobs in West Virginia by introducing legislation to create a coal gasification plant in the state as well as co-sponsoring legislation to promote the construction of coal-to-liquid facilities. She has consistently worked to support economic stimulus packages and meaningful tax relief for small businesses as well as promoting legislation that limits frivolous lawsuits that hurt our economy and limit job growth.
In 2006, Congresswoman Capito helped ensure that the House approved mine safety legislation that contained the most sweeping reforms to mine safety laws in nearly thirty years. Her advocacy on behalf of these reforms led then-House Majority Leader John Boehner to praise Capito for her leadership and determination in helping usher the legislation through the House. President Bush signed the bill into law on June 16, 2006.
Congresswoman Capito divides her time between visiting the 18 counties in her district and serving on two House Committees: the Committee on Financial Services - where she is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity - and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. She is also a member of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues and a member of the Congressional Steel Caucus and Sportsman’s Caucus.
Residing in Charleston, West Virginia, Capito is as committed to these issues as she is to being an energetic mother and a fan of sports of all kinds. Capito graduated from Duke with a B.S. in Zoology, and also holds a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. She is married to Charles L. Capito, Jr. and they have three children: sons Charles (and his wife Laura) and Moore, and one daughter, Shelley.
