The mWomen initiative, launched in Washington on Thursday, hopes to close the technology gap between men and women in developing countries.

It is estimated that, in the Third World, around 300 million more men own mobile phones than women, and the aim of the scheme is to get mobile devices in to the hands of another 150 million women.

It will be interesting to see how Hillary's work as SOS affects women in developing countries 10-20 years down the road, after the programs she supports come to full fruition. I am thinking of all the little girls in these countries and how different their lives will be compared to their mothers'.

And that's a great photo of Hillary and Cherie Blair!

Exactly!

Nothing like women being able to communicate with each other.... in person or over the phone! :)  It works at all levels of social strata to find support structure among others, especially women, around you.. and for more.

Having lived in one of those countries and seen the mammoth impact of cell phones -- having that cellphone in their pocket has made a tremendous difference to women in India.  There is a newfound confidence in women that I saw in this past visit to India that I had not seen in prior visits.  In places like Afghanistan, it can literally be the lifesaver.  It can give tremendous power to women - it is that immediate connection with the world - outbound or inbound.  An easy way for people in remote places to check on your health and wellbeing, which can be vital at times.

Yes, I loved that photo of Hillary and Cherie! Further underscores the message on support structure.
