Clinton's support highest among conservative, less well-educated Democratsby Frank NewportPRINCETON, NJ -- If Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were to challenge President Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2012, she would currently have the support of 37% of Democrats nationally, while 52% would support Obama.

CNN's take on this poll

what does it tell you that American middle and indies like the Clintons more than the Dems do? and the country wants to toss out the dems and go back to the days of W because they despise these dems. if she formed a centrist party in 2012 i would love it. by the way, if sooo many people including dems polled said they largely favor Bill Clinton over Obama, cant they figure out that he and Hillary worked together and there is a way to return to the 90s despite the Constitution. I am like House, people are IDIOTS!!!!!!

Breath, Amy.  This is Gallup...one of the worst pollsters during the 2008 race, both primary and general elections.

Some facts to consider:

1. If these folks had polled a bunch of PUMAs, how many of us would still identify ourselves as Democrats? I always tell pollsters I am an indie and I'm sure there are others among us who do likewise. Some even identify as Pubs now, even though they would support Hillary over any GOP candidate.

2. Hillary has been largely out of the public eye for nearly two years now. She does the Sunday morning talk shows once every four months or so, but that's the only time most Americans see or hear from her. The mainstream media doesn't cover her work as SOS. Just take a look at the articles posted right here on this forum-- the best ones tend to come from foreign news sources. But most Americans don't read those articles or visit the same blogs where we all hang out. They're not really interested in foreign policy, they're too worried about keeping a roof over their collective heads. To them, it must feel as if Hillary has gone away on an extended business trip. I'm sure her numbers would go up if she were to declare her candidacy and then make a round of TV appearances where she outlined her plan to fix the economy.

3. As the Admin at Hillary is 44 pointed out, it's bad news for Obama that Gallup is even doing this poll at all. It means that people are beginning to think the unthinkable.

4. When the media characterized the Tea Party as uneducated/backward/stupid, it only added fuel to their fire. The same is likely to hold true among the Hillary supporters.

Don't buy it. Politico had a story up yesterday that if Clinton were to run, 1/3 of Dems would vote for her, 1/3 for Obama, and 1/3 for someone else. Both can't be true.

PS:  Fox news did a poll of who would vote for who if the election were held today:  They had this out:

"It’s a tighter race if it includes Hillary Clinton as the independent candidate. In that hypothetical matchup, Obama would receive 30 percent, Palin 29 percent and Clinton 27 percent.

That Fox poll is virtually a tie. And again, we have to consider that Hillary has barely been on TV whereas Obama and Palin are both on TV constantly and they each have at least one of the cable news networks actively promoting them and their agenda.
