Editorial

Mr. President, where are you?

As the country sinks into a late-'70s malaise and President Obama's approval rating drops, we could use a little "hope."

By The Denver Post (Emphasis added)

Barack Obama ought to be one of the happiest men in America.

In less than two years, he's presided over monumental, historic changes to our health care system and financial industries. He has won a Nobel Peace Prize and already has nominated two like-minded scholars to the U.S. Supreme Court, leaving a lasting imprint on the high court.

Yet, his approval rating (44 percent) dropped to historic lows this past week. The country has been in a funk for the better part of a year and the economy is dangerously close to a double-dip recession.

His own party has needled him for not going far enough or moving fast enough. And Republicans are salivating over the very real possibility of wresting control of at least one house of Congress from Democrats in November.

Jobs have vanished faster than BP's credibility. And the oil leak has been a drain on the national psyche.

Welcome to the summer of malaise.

Welcome back, Carter.

[SNIP]

One media outlet asked last week: Can Obama get his groove back?

He must. The nation still needs a unifying leader, one who can lift up all citizens and restore our hope and pride and belief that America's best days not only are ahead, but near.

I really don't get why everyone is still hyping the "accomplishment" of the health care bill. Have they forgotten the town hall meetings where people were demonstrating and yelling and screaming they didn't want it? Over half of the population DID NOT want this bill passed the way it was written. I don't think its appropriate to call this an accomplishment, they crammed a messy faulty bill down the throats of the American people despite the fact the people didn't want it. That is not an accomplishment, that is imposing your will on the people and an abuse of power. I don't think they understand the anger that still exists because of it.

I know what you mean, Jdona. I've read two articles recently saying that inside the Beltway (aka - Bull Sh** World) people see Obama as a huge success because of the "landmark legislation" for which he can claim credit. If he has done anything which would impact the lives of Americans in a POSITIVE way, why, then, are we not aware of it? Why are the progressives deserting him? Why is the economy not better? Why are we scared to death about whether we'll continue to have decent health care coverage once his HCR (using the term loosely?

People are recognizing that Obama lacks the experience and competence to lead. But, if those were his only shortcomings, he might be able to overcome them by surrounding himself with people who possess those qualities. The greatest problem Americans have with Obama is that he is untrustworthy. Obviously, most pols are. But, I mean an industrial strength kind of untrustworthy! People recognize that he lacks concern, empathy, loyalty to America, and the ability to pretend that this country is his first priority. His AG's refusal to prosecute the domestic terrorism perpetrated by the New Black Panthers is only one example of the racism, corruption, crony politics, and antipathy for rule of law that characterize Obama's presidency.

Obama can't help that he lacks the ability to give a damn about the country. Hell, his ties with other countries are stronger than his ties to the U S. The people who perpetrated the theft of the presidency for this shallow, self-absorbed man are to blame. Let's count among those the DNC, MSM, MoveOn, ACORN, to name but a few. Those are the people who have demonstrated great lack of concern for America, as they crowned Obama president, engaging in all manner of lies and trickery to do so, they treated the process as if it were a game. They behaved as if America could be reduced to a prize for the winning contestant, or the contestant for whom they could steal it.

They are a disgrace. Obama's a disgrace. America is in trouble.

yes, I agree freespirit.

jdona, Note also that the article recognizes that the HCR was "achieved" with backroom sleazy dealmaking that he had campaigned against.

More importantly, the following two paragraphs are truly remarkable coming from Denver Post.

We endorsed Obama in 2008, believing his plans for the fragile economy and frozen financial markets were superior to John McCain's erratic ideas. But we also hoped he would restore the nation's reputation with the rest of the world. But instead of being vilified, as we were under Bush, the United States is now suddenly bordering on being irrelevant.

Followed by examples of how their expectations have remained unmet on both fronts.

There's also been an intangible, yet inescapable, sense of unease in the country, reminiscent of our late- 1970s malaise. Faith in Obama's "Yes we can" slogan has faded faster than the Obama-Biden stickers still clinging to bumpers.

That unease is very reminiscent of Carter years.

The real issue is indeed credibility.  I would combine with that a true inability to communicate in layperson terms in both summary statements and examples what really needs to be communicated.  Leadership communication is definitely not his forte.  When he speaks professorially, people simply do not have the patience to listen and digest what he has to communicate (which by the way if you really listen AND believe everything he has to say, is not half bad).  So, there lies the problem.

Week after week, he is also inflected with these issues one after the other that emenate from inability to work with the opposition.  Timing is extremely important in some matters - where he has struck a "Katrina" all over again on this nation.. and elsewhere, he has acted too soon.  In the Sherrod matter, he has hastened to commit the SAME MISTAKE he did that resulted in the beer summit -- what is worse, even I have begun to call it the Sherrod matter when it really should be the Breitbart libel/racism matter.  Instead, whenever dirt hits the fan, it seems to land on the WH.

Rep.Murtha told us all that experience is critical in a President. Yep, WE TOLD YOU SO!

Saunders,

This is his biggest problem, I think, with the public mood at this point.  Add the Justice Department dropping the charges against the "New" Black Panthers, and this adminstration is looking like one of the most racist since the mid 1800's.  It jumps to conclusions without all the facts in these matters.
