Election 2010: Utah Republican Primary for Senate

Utah GOP Senate Primary: Bennett Earns 37% Support
Thursday, April 15, 2010

Incumbent Republican Senator Bob Bennett is under serious political attack in Utah for not being conservative enough, but he has the highest level of support so far among the state’s likely Republican Primary voters. One-out-of-five primary voters remain undecided.

Still, the first Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 survey of likely GOP Primary voters in the state finds Bennett with only 37% support when pitted against his four top challengers, and Utah’s primary system raises the strong possibility of just a two-person race for the party’s nomination.

Attorney Mike Lee, who many view as Bennett’s chief opponent, earns 14% support, as does businessman Tim Bridgewater, who has run twice unsuccessfully for the House. Former Congressman Merrill Cook picks up six percent (6%) of the primary vote, while businesswoman Cherilyn Eagar trails with four percent (4%).

Most tellingly, however, 21% of primary voters are undecided, with another three percent (3%) who prefer some other candidate in the race.
