Democratic Party Image Drops to Record Low (Gallup 4/8/10)

Americans' favorable rating of the Democratic Party dropped to 41% in a late March USA Today/Gallup poll, the lowest point in the 18-year history of this measure. Favorable impressions of the Republican Party are now at 42%, thus closing the gap between the two parties' images that has prevailed for the past four years.
Gallup last measured party images in late August/early September of last year. At that point, the Democratic Party enjoyed an 11-point favorable image advantage over the Republican Party. Now, the favorable ratings of the two parties are essentially tied.

The images of the two major parties have particular significance in a midterm election year. For example, the favorable rating of the Democratic Party exceeded that of the Republican Party by 52% to 37% just prior to the 2006 midterm elections, in which the Democrats gained 31 House seats.

Americans' current 41% favorable rating of the Democratic Party is five points lower than the party's previous low, recorded twice in 2005.

By contrast, the Republican Party's image reached its all-time low of 31% in December 1998 -- just after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton. The Republicans' current rating is improved from a pair of 34% ratings Gallup measured in late 2008 and in May 2009.

My thoughts exactly, Optix... well, not exactly, but I like your term for them better. lol biggrin

I'm actually a little surprised that their rating is not lower.

Oh how we need a third party. The Pubs are having difficulty defining themselves - still. The Dems have gone bat sh** crazy. An active, viable third party would be just the thing right now. I know there's the Tea Party, but not enough is known about their social platform as yet, at least for me.

Yes, a third party is sorely needed.

For me, Tea Party does not fill that role and here's why.

Despite the tax-based genesis of Tea Party, it by and large overlaps with GOP on social beliefs they have portrayed in their meetings - in people who spoke up in several meetings that got aired (I watched most in continuous live mode, unedited).

Their social conservatism became obvious from what they cheered - this is so in terms of BOTH what could be observed (prayer, guns, cheering for pro-life matters, dissing pro-choice matters) and what they do not seem to emphasize (equality of all, humane treatment of people, dignity for all).

Frankly, it is this that has defined them more so than what they have shouted loud or posted on their websites, which in itself is very conservative. Especially lately, when their anger directed at Barney Frank after Health Care Reform passed, I was like, ha? What does Barney have to do with HCR? Well, Barney is gay. With that, their "take country back" got new meaning in my book. Now, I have come to define "take country back" as a GOP tag line to push conservatism.

I have difficulty embracing the Green Party when they are such strong proponents of the fake carbon assets. License to pollute being traded and taxed. Nah, that's not green. That charcoal grey with a lot of money jingling behind.

Another third party alternative is sorely needed.
