A new CBS News poll shows that Barrack Obama has hit a new low in job approval polls with only 44% approving of the job he's doing as president. There was no bump for the passing of the healthcare bill and in fact 55% disapproved of his handling of healthcare.

And for good reason. He made a mess of it.

But before anyone tryies to use that number to say the majority oppose healthcare reform, that number includes many Democrats and liberals who are furious with Obama for his selling out of the public option when the votes were there to pass it. The fact that no public option is in the bill can be laid right at Obama's feet. It was another promise reneged on and through the entire healthcare debate most Democrats disapproved of Obama's handling of it even if some didnt want to say so publicly.

Based on Obama's sinking numbers and both Democrats and independents growing weary of Obama's lack of leadership, his duplicity, and lack of strong reforms for Wall Street banks as well as his poor performance on healthcare reform, there is every possibility that Democrats running for re-election will distance themselves from Obama and emphasize Democratic initiatives. There are few Democrats would say privately that they think Obama is doing a good job. Because he clearly isnt.

It is not Obama who will be up for re-election in the fall, andt Democrats will try to insure their own elections are not referendums on Obama's performance. Which is all the more reason the Democratic congress needs to pass a public option before November and take the credit for it because with unemployment at 9.7% and no forecasts that call for a big improvement by November, Obama's poll numbers might continue to get lower.

With the passage of HCR - which most Americans did not want - the Dems up for re-election may already face an uphill battle. I imagine they will try to find a way to distance themselves from Obama. They may find it difficult to do, however. No doubt their opponents will remind the public of their voting records.
