Tough Times for Dems in the Midwest (PPP 3/23/10)

Barack Obama's approval numbers in the two places we polled this week- Wisconsin and Ohio- tell the story. He won Wisconsin by 14 points in 2008 but we find his approval there at a net -2 (46/48) for a 16 point drop since the election. It's a similar story in Ohio. He won there by four points in 2008 but our approval numbers there for him tomorrow will show him at -13 (40/53) for a drop of 17 points. If his national approval rating was falling the way it is in these two states he'd be at about 43/53 for the whole country.

If the election was today Democrats would likely lose something they currently hold in every state where they have something to lose- Pennsylvania Governor and perhaps Senate, Michigan Governor, Ohio Governor, Indiana Senate, Iowa Governor, Wisconsin Governor and perhaps Senate, and Illinois Senate and/or Governor. Only Minnesota doesn't join the party because Democrats have nothing to lose there.

Yes, I expect this to be so... Pres.Obama and the dems will need to work very hard to communicate what the benefits of the HCR are so people are not disenchanted come November. Not an easy task to do when the public opinion has already been so polarized. People are not in the mode of wanted to read the details..

The msm sure has been drinking the Kool-Aid these past few days. Obama is their hero once again. This should have some effect on his numbers, but I don't expect it to be a permanent bounce.

It is unclear who is "MSM" anymore especially when FOX News has the biggest share of TV news broadcast.  I do not know how bad the non-FOX coverage has been.

FOX News - It has been atrocious.  They have coverd very little of the facts of health care reform, especially on the benefits side.

For the past 3-4 days I have watched C-SPAN exclusively and it is quite an eye opener!

It has taken a very long time and a lot of effort to truly understand the health care reform bill, and I have to say that it is far better than I had expected; in fact it is fairly close to what Hillary proposed in many areas especially mandate.  The gap in my impression of the bill and what it has turned is is despite my reading many sources, but I was mostly watching FOX News as primary TV news source, and the TV does seem to have a major impact - tone, body language and all.

I read in an article in the last couple of days that FOX News watchers know the least of the facts and details of health care reform - this came in a real survey.

As I had recently been looking at the summaries from some sources, I observed that FOX had not covered any of it. One does not learn of any of the benefits of Health Care reform from FOX and that is really really bad.

I am glad to not be watching as much FOX News. I already do not even have CNN and MSNBC for over a year.. but may add them in just to have some balance going forward.

To get a balance we need to have news from all sources.   It takes so much effort to get real summary in condensed form that is not marketing or mega biased judgment on the bill.

As people discover the benefits of the health care reform, they are likely to see how biased FOX News has been.

Media has become 'free-for-all' because there are no serious consequences for lying in the media.

I would not be surprised if the government introduces new regulations on news coverage.  All ends of the coverage badly need to substantially increase their fact-content on their reports and reduce their lies and innuendos.

Right...what's another "freedom" just shot to hell by our current government.  SCOTUS would shoot any "regualtion" down as a DIRECT violation of our Constitution.

Seems lately The Constitution only matters as long as it suits those in power.

Yes, 'introduce' doesnt mean pass, lol.

I understand GOP trying to put forth amendments to derail the Reconciliation bill. It was all very interesting... but to use those to spread mis-/disinformation is downright wrong.

FOX News and other overt and covert right-wing websites are spreading that the 39 amendments to the Reconciliation bill that got struck on procedural or other grounds mean that Dems actually explicitly made provision for those in the bill. Not true. It is this type of falsehood that will get media in hot waters.

Introducing amendments to a reconciliation bill -- you really do not have the time to consider the amendments at all. GOP was set out to introduce "hundreds of amendments" and they stopped at 39 after some negotiations. Dont forget that the base bill (Senate version) had already passed the House.

I hope now that the Reconciliation bill has passed, they will introduce fresh amendments to the passed bill - and consider them one at a time, with due respect and consideration - lord knows this imperfect bill can use more work in implementation and finetuning.

When will we ever see these two parties working together? What a shame.

There is misinformation and disinformation on both sides. We have a tough battle keeping the information straight and factual.
