Hillary Clinton: Fired up and ready to run in 2012 (ChicagoNow 2/19/10)

There is now a good chance that Hillary Clinton, 62, will run for President in 2012 [which she of course denies]. The Hillary story is the story that the mainstream media missed yesterday. It all starts with the unraveling of the Obama administration policy with Iran. Hillary seems to be on top of the danger from that country that is becoming iminent [See below] and she will probably be able to argue that she couldn’t, as Secretary of State, persuade President Obama to take a harder line. So, the blame for Iran, as with other failed Obama administration policies, will be laid at Obama’s doorstep. But, as I said, let’s start with ysterday’s story about Iran and then we’ll work our way up to Hillary’s 2012 run.

There is also a good shot that the Republicans will pick up the House and Senate in 2010. There is an even better chance that the Republicans will come very close but the Democrats will maintain their majorities, especially in the Senate. Either way, many Democrats will be ready to change horses. Yes, even though the Democratic Primaries are populated by strong liberals– as the Republican Primaries are populated by strong conservatives– ideology has its limits. The ability to win counts. Hillary can win the nomination, this time, by running to the center and arguing she can keep the Presidency and the Congress for the Democrats in 2012.

Note that Hillary has stayed pretty much out of the Obama domestic program. No reason to blame her for the lackluster economic recovery, wasteful jobs program, messy continued financial bailouts, floundering healthcare reform, death of cap and trade and education reform. That is all due to what Team Hillary will characterize as the inept management of Obama, Axelrod and Emanuel, the three amigos gone bad.

And, Hillary is the Obama Administration’s hawk on Iran, as she was when she ran against Obama in the 2008 Primaries. Hillary announced that Iran’s military nuclear program was alive and well this past Sunday and the mainstream media completely missed it. But, she said it. And, she will argue that she tried to steer the Commander-in-Chief to a tougher line on Iran, but she couldn’t. And, she tried, behind the scenes, to get Obama to be more bi-partisan, but she didn’t succeed, so Obama lost most, if not all, of the Democratic majorities. Or, so Hillary will argue.

Obama’s approval rating is now down to 47%; The Republicans now lead the Democrats in the generic congressional vote and almost 60% of the country think the country is on the wrong track. [Real Clear Politics poll averages]. As Hillary’s gender, if not ideological sister, Sarah Palin likes to say on the stomp, “How’s all that change and hope stuff working out for you.”

Do you want to continue down that path of gloom and doom for the Democratic Party, or are you ready for the responsible leadership of Hillary Clinton, she’ll ask.

Well, are you?

Jen, Thank you for a great article!  Yes, the only bright corner for the Dem party right now is Hillary. I hope the DNC can see it clearly. I hope all the superdelegates are banging their heads against the wall wondering what the heck did we do... and how can we correct this and bring Hillary into POTUS office in 2012.
