Bayh's Prognosis: Democrats Must Move to the Middle

Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, the very embodiment of calm understatement, seems an unlikely character to play the role of scold. But in recent weeks—particularly after last week's Massachusetts mauling—he has been scolding his Democratic Party, and sternly.

His message: Democrats and their president need to move decisively to the political center and root themselves there by showing they are serious about controlling spending and the deficit, which angry mainstream voters see as the real sign that Washington is out of touch.

Thus, while many Democrats complain that the Obama administration's problems arise because it hasn't been aggressive enough in pursuing a liberal agenda, Mr. Bayh arises to make the opposite case.

President Barack Obama, Mr. Bayh said in an interview, needs to "step it up" in his State of the Union address Wednesday and get tougher with Congress. Here's his message to the White House: "My strong advice is for you to draw a line in the sand on spending in the State of the Union, and to have the president pledge to veto spending bills that exceed the limits he puts out." The White House may be tacking in that direction; officials say it's preparing a plan to freeze some domestic spending.

Many in his party, Mr. Bayh said, are "tone deaf" about the real message voters are sending, which is that Democrats have "overreached rather than looking for consensus with moderates and independents." He added: "It is amazing that some people here in Congress still don't get it.…For those people it may take a political catastrophe of biblical proportions before they get it. I don't think we'll get to that. But we might."

More . . .

"

====================

Note: Sen. Bayh is trailing his Republican opponent in polls.. I posted that news yesterday or perhaps day before..

I've had dealings with Mr. Bayh, and he's no saint. I told him if he voted for this health care and cap and trade==he's outta here. Well he did. So this is nothing but BS.

Funny, but you get exactly what you ask for Mr. Bayh.

I hate to be blunt, especially to someone who was loyal to Hillary during the primaries... (and that part I very much respect)

but my loyalty to this country COMES FIRST!

Where the hell was this man on December 24th at 1AM... oh yes... in the Senate along with ALL THE OTHER LUNATICS CRAMMING THIS PO$ rationcare bill down our throats...

if there was no special election in MA, we ALL would have been screaming for the lunatics in DC to stop.

So, now they want us to forget that they stood with the lunatic undemocratic party OVER the American people?!?!?!?

HELLL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they abused their power, and I sure as hell do not trust any of them!

I still trust Hillary....and Representative Altmire for getting those orphans out of Haiti and here to Pittsburgh.  The young women that ran that orphanage are in his district and he got the job DONE.

altmire (I think) was one of the few dims who refused to vote for this rationcare bill, said it was too expensive.

and those 2 sisters for getting those 54 orphans out, yep, him and gov. rendell did a marvelous and commendable job.

in november, it makes no difference to me, I don't trust either party having too much power, at this point its the undemocratic party, and I will be voting all conservatives/tea party people.

I hear all these dims now saying "oh I promise to be independent", yea right!  nothing but liars...... I don't trust them... Hillary yes I do trust her, but frankly if she has gone along with the rationcare plan that was presented & crammed down Americans's throats, then I would be working to kick her out as well,

this is beyond parties at this point......

I haven't read anything about her opinion of the current healthcare bill....is that a telling sign of what she thinks and she is using her SOS position as a cover for not discussing it?

Smart move if that is in fact what she is doing.

Hillary mentioned "americans will get what they deserve" once when asked about rationcare bill, she never had mentioned it since... good for her!

as for Bill, I wish he would shut up about it, he has been endorsing it, I lost respect for him, Bill needs to just do like Hillary does, sort of support it and then go about his business, but as soon as I heard he was openly endorsing it, I pretty much lost all the respect I had for him.
