" 67% Say News Media Have Too Much Influence Over Government Decisions
Thursday, January 14, 2010
Voters are even more convinced now that the news media have too much influence on the actions of government and try to help political candidates they want to win. Most also still think the average reporter is more liberal than they are.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 67% of likely U.S. voters believe the news media have too much power and influence over government decisions, up six points from October. Just eight percent (8%) think the media have too little power and influence, and 19% think their level of power is about right.
Only 20% of all voters say most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage of a political campaign. Seventy-two percent (72%) say most reporters try to help the candidate they want to win.
This was one of the most obvious and most infuriating factors in Obama's candidacy in 2008. The open adoration MSM displayed toward Obama during the primary and general election will be an embarrassment to the profession for years to come. But, it is the blatant, misogyny, sexism, and gross disrespect with which they treated 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, a sitting senator and former first lady of the US, that will be MSM's shame for decades into the future.
It is wonderful that the public is becoming increasingly aware of the media bias and its significant impact on this country's election system and policies. If there is an ethics board or a body of any type that monitors ethics violations by the members of the profession (as there is in most professional arenas), hopefully, such a board will recognize that the sexism and biased reporting of 2008 has resulted in an erosion of public trust in MSM . People are figuring out that the guardians of democracy are really just guard dogs for Barack.
