This really ticks me off. WTF is wrong with Mattel and Sotherbys in London for showing this doll.  I guess they will have Ken dressed as a sucide bomber next.

I saw this on Facebook. Sick...

If I had one of those Barbies, I would pretend she works for the Dept. of Homeland Security. She'll take some of GI Joe's weapons, hide them under the burqa, go out and capture Osama bin Laden, and blow his f-ing brains out.

Then, of course, she'll take off the burka, put on one of her glitzy Barbie dresses, and attend a lavish ceremony where she will receive a medal of honor.

Today Puma Prowl is out on this one! Talk about degradation, and fear.

It's London. They let that bull get a foothold. Now they are too pc, or too far gone, to undo the damage.

I know what I am not buying my granddaughters this year.  I refuse to purchase anything from Mattel first the stripper barbie and now the Burka Barbie.

Here's the Puma Prowl in case anyone wants to participate. I love Murphy's questions to Mattel.

Dear Mattel,

As an American woman and a member of Puma PAC, People United Means Action, I have a couple of questions about your marvelous new Slave Barbie Collector’s Item:

* Does she come with stones?
* Does her head come off?
* Does she come with a tiny vial of acid?
* Does she need to be accompanied by a man in order to leave the store?
* Who gets flogged if she takes her Burqa off in public? Doll? Or child?
* Who arranges Burqa Barbie’s marriage?
* If Burqa Barbie is “honor killed” do I get a refund?

The Burkha Slave Barbie is an outrage. My family, friends, and I will be boycotting ALL of Mattel’s products this holiday season, including, of course, Barbie, but also Hot Wheels, Fisher Price, and American Girl. We will DEFINITELY NOT BE BUYING any toys from Mattel for girls ever again after this outrageous insult to women and girls and to the women who fight for women’s freedom and rights worldwide.

Sincerely,

I did the Prowl. And I intend to keep my word about not buying Mattel products. My 7-year-old niece loves the American Girls, but I can buy doll clothes and accessories for her AGs that are made by other companies.

I showed this doll to my 9 year old daughter and she said that it can't be a Barbie.  I asked her why.  She said, "because it doesn't look like a Barbie, the eyes are too far apart, it's someone making fun of Barbie, the Barbie people would never do this to Barbie, it's not real".  When I explained to her that this is by Mattel and that it's a Barbie, here's her reply, "that is just sick, why would they do that to Barbie, I don't like what they did to her, it's just mean".

My daughter is a huge Barbie collector and this has made her very upset.

Save the Children actually replied to my Prowl. Here's what they wrote:

Thank you for sharing with Save the Children your concerns over the recent auction of an exhibition piece featuring Barbie dolls.

The doll clad in a burkha was one of 10 Barbie dolls clothed by an Italian designer/artist as her personal expression of costumes from around the world. The designer/artists set of 10 Barbies, each clad in different dress, was among the 500 Barbies representing different cultures that were auctioned at a charity event in Italy . The dolls are not available for sale in any store.

As you may know, proceeds from that event will be used to help support Save the Childrens global Rewrite the Future campaign to bring education to children affected by conflicts. Over the past three years, with our global donors generosity, Save the Children has helped more than 10 million girls and boys in places of war and strife receive a better education, and has helped more than 1 million children gain access to school, which is equivalent to opening two schools every day.

Save the Children does not take a position on the designer/artists personal expression, and as a non-religious, non-sectarian organization is dedicated to serving vulnerable children in need worldwide regardless of theirs or their families cultural or religious beliefs.

I thank you again for contacting Save the Children.

Sincerely,
Charles F. MacCormack
President and CEO

I think we need to find out who this designer is and Prowl him or her also. This person obviously doesn't know the difference between a doll that represents diversity/multiculturalism vs. a doll that represents misogyny and degradation. I would have had no problem with a Muslim Barbie if she were wearing a traditional outfit or a modest modern outfit with a scarf on her head. But this doll was wearing a freakin' burqa!

They are taking a position by allowing this degrading outfit to be used.  I question the depth their dedication to serving vulnerable children if they'll allow this to be used to raise money.  The end doesn't justify the means, and they're creating more vulnerable children by promoting the "burka mentality"!
I like the idea of a prowl, Jen, and thanks so much for writing STC!!

Mattel also responded to my Prowl! I am very used to writing letters and participating in Prowls, but this is the first time I've gotten two responses for the same Prowl. Here's what they said:

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate the opportunity to respond.

In this case, Italian artist and designer Eliana Lorena used Barbie as a model to showcase her interpretation of cultural dress from around the world. Barbie was literally her canvas and the outfits were the artist's personal expression. This was one of the 500 different Barbie dolls representing 500 different cultures that were auctioned at a charity event. Barbie has no religious affiliation and we have no plans to make commercial editions of the dolls. These dolls are not available for sale.

Sincerely,
