Thanks to Building for pointing this out to us at Hillarysworld and finding the phone numbers for the school. There was a 15 year old female raped at a school event on school grounds by at least 15 men this was witnessed by at least 25 people who did nothing. They did not call the police and some even took pics of this young girl Please call the school and ask them why nothing is being done to remedy this situation and to protect other girls. This is an outrage and something we at Hillarysworld are not going to tolerate. Please join us in preventing this sort of outrage from continueing.
This happened on Saturday, October 24,2009 Principal's Name is Julio Franco 1250 23rd ST Richmond, CA 510-237-8770

Thanks for the info, HMG. I tried calling just now, 11:01 EST. It said the office was closed! I tried to use the 411 directory, but got "There are no matches to that name" for Franco. I also tried "Smith" and "Jones," just to see if I could catch someone else, but no dice. I'll check back later to see what happened with other people's attempts.

Contra Costa Unified School District 1108 Bissett Ave Richmond, Ca. 510-231-1100
Contra Costa Times Newspaper Editor ccnnewsrelease@bayareanewsgroup.com 925-977-8406
Thanks everyone for posting this information. I found the district's and the high school's website and will contact them later today. As I said in another thread, at this point my anger has turned towards the school administration. I want to know what kind of security they had there that night and how they plan on protecting women and girls in their schools from now on. Parents let their kids go to school events because they think there will be adult presents. Where were the adults during that dance?
If anyone wants to send a check in support of our little sister, you can do so, but be sure to note on the check and/or letter, For Sexual Assault Victim". They have nothing online for this, so mail to: Richmond High Student Fund 1250 23 rd St. Richmond, Ca. 94804
Feel free to call the spokesperson: Marian Trujillo 510-23-1100 (hit 0)
Give him your ideals, including how they might help the students, and development of sexual violence classes for the students, give them your INPUT.
Lara, there was 400 at the dance, they called it "successful".........uh? 4 police officers and 3 administrators............two had to leave early. They have cameras but they weren't working and have not been for several weeks.
This is an Action Alert Update Optix and I think that Hillarysworld should contact the Rep from that district George Miller as well as speaker Pelosi since she represents a sorrounding district. Please contact Senators Boxer and Feingold also to ask them to speak out about this horrible crime. I am working on getting the addresses and phone numbers of all of the above mentioned people.

Your questions are important Lara!
I don't know the specifics of all this, but if there were four police officers there during the dance how was it that they were totally unaware that this assault was going on? That doesn't make any sense to me. If I were a parent at that school I would demand that there were substantially more teachers/administrators and police present at a future school event that took place in the evening and I would hold them accountable if something happened to my child. Actually, I wouldn't allow my kid to attend events at that high school during non-school hours.
The parents of the girl who was raped are in shock right now and are in survival mode, but as soon as they have a chance to think about things they should demand that the district attorney bring major charges against anyone he/she can who was was involved with the assault and I would suggest they also lawyer up and sue the school district. This is b.s.. Once again, most parents allow their 15-year olds to go to SCHOOl dances because they believe they will be chaperoned. That was not the case here. Administrators did a horrible job of protecting kids in this school.
One student said she was a "churchgoer" trying to fit in....Students said they have been fearful because of a lack of police security on the campus. That several who attended had no id's........no one asked them to leave.
The School Board has been real slow in explaining why there is no fence around the court yard, and it is seluded and not very well lit, and why the camera's were inoperative.
At their hearing today, 3 wore bullet proof vest............they did not enter a plea. Manuel Ortega, the 19 year old did not have a vest, but like the other did not enter a plea.
As I understand it, besides Manuel Ortega 19 (non student); 15 year old Cody Ray Smith, 16 year old Ari Morales, and 17 year old Marcelles Peter did have a hearing, one more boy has a hearing set for another date.
I also understand that the father did in fact try to call his daughter when she wasn't at the location to be picked up.
Thank you for this information. I didn't see it in time to call, but I will do so on Mon. And, I will contact the officials mention over the week-end. This kind of action is so important -reaching out to a fellow human who has been treated in this sick, sub-human manner. As the mother of a daughter, I can't imagine the anguish this girl and her family are feeling. Words are just not enough for this situation. Action is required. Thanks for creating this action alert. Hmg.

I thought I'd read a couple of times that two adults were involved. THOSE hearings should be front and center, too, if that is true!

Manuel Ortega is 18, considered an adult............could be that the 17 year old is also considered an adult.............As of this morning another boy was arrested.
You are absolutely right, those hearings should be front and center, and I hope that we have groups of women against rape to report on the hearings........Then I think, every student in that high school should view the proceedures, should know what happened, and what the outcome will be. All of them ought to be required to write a report on it before they graduate.

Absolutely; there is something SERIOUSLY wrong at this school, and it materialized in this fashion.
I just called the Unified School District and left a message for a Mr. Trujillo. He is apparently in charge of that sort of thing, and bus passes!
Left a message for the Contra Costa Times editor, saying that I know newspapers can be a great force for good, and that I hope they will do their part to get the students at this school educated about this type of matter.
Most important part: I called Rep. George Miller's Richmond office - no answer, no message machine. I called his Washington DC office. Found out they are leaving it to the Richmond office to get out into the community and "talk to people" about this.
I said that Rep. Miller needs to get out in the public eye and make a statement about this and DO something about it, educationally. He is the - get ready for this - CHAIRMAN OF THE EDUCATION AND LABOR COMMITTEE IN WASHINGTON! So I would encourage Hillary's Worldians to call his office and insist that, starting next week, Rep. George Miller make a public statement and start planning what kind of educational program would be best, or cooperate with the school district to figure that out.
The woman I talked with gave me the impression that where it happened is considered a "bad area," and I said that did not make a difference, that it needs to be helped and that it was obvious that what was being done is not helping, if this kind of thing happens.
Please call these people. The DC number is 202-225-2095. Thanks and God bless you and our precious children!
If you could pass this info to other blogs, that would help, too.

This is key. People have a tendency to fall into inaction because by just proclaiming that these kinds of things are prone to happen in "bad" areas or poor areas or where there's a large number of people of color, etc... If this was a "bad" area then that's more of a reason to have much better security. Doh.
Thanks for giving us more info on how we can help out.
Good Job! It's late today, but come Monday I will be on the phone to Miller. And I will start blogging to have others call. Does he has something online, I will check.
You know Richmond use to be an all white neighborhood in 1940's, 1950's.....My point is Urban development stepped in with their acorn housing, etc, and this is what you get in the big cities. Regardless of this bit of information, I would have liked to ask the woman if she thinks "Colleges" across this country are bad too! We know the stats on women being raped at frat houses, etc...would like to know what she thinks of De Anza College where the high school student was raped.

That really ticked me off. It was like saying so what if a poor ghetto girl gets raped. Optix and I will not let this die. We are working very hard to make sure this never happens to another woman ever again. I want to make sure this girl will never be forgotten.

I could use your help in trying to figure this out:
Don't say GANG RAPE, don't say GANG RAPE.................Say Rape Concert! Rape Concert.
I can't understand, unless they want to reduce the lost of potency to the term gang rape................or is it that it becomes associated with gangs in various cities, and they feel this is causeing conflicts or sterotyping?
By using rape concert.......are they trying to make it more acceptable? I don't know. But I will be asking Dara Cashman, Dist. Att. in Contra County.
Words are powerful................
Update:
Not only was the 15 year old (white) girl gang raped, and beaten, she had foreign object inserted into her vagina.
Salvador Rodriques, 21, was released, no charges filed - insuffiecient evidence.
I don't care what race any of them are, but the card is being played, so too are polictics of party afflilations. What should be pointed out is that 99% of offenders are males.
If this girl was targeted because she is white then this should be treated as a hate crime, legally speaking. I agree with those who say that any kind of rape is automatically a hate crime, but unfortunately the law doesn't see it that way.
I am under the impression that this rape was gang related if that is the case she more then likely wasn't targeted because of her race but that they wanted to gain noitoriety within their gang or gain membership with the gang. I have said this a million times if people are willing to kill to gain membership into a street gang rape is nothing.
I believe this is the 7th male arrested: Elvis Josue Torrentes, 21 was arrested at home yesterday and charged.
Jose Carlos Montano, 18 year olf who was arrested appeared for the first time in court, teary eyed, and his pirvate lawyer, Mary Carey, said later, "As you can see he's a SENSITIVE18 year old." WTH?
At a rallly on the football field, the victim sent a message via her pastor, Jim Wheeler of the First Presbyterian Church "We realize people are angry about this, but let the anger cause change, change that is necessary to keep our children, our neighbors and our friends safe."
"Violence is always the wrong Choice," said one woman from the Community Violence Solutions that operate a rape crisis center.
Assemblywoman Nancy Skiner, spoke briefly, announcing that the permit to build a fenceis now in place for the campus. "This kind of gang rape is certainly not normal, she said."It rises to our attention how we really need to address the heart of the issues." She said economic stresses, foreclosures and other combinations may have exacerbrated the the horrific crime."
(I doubt very seriously that the judge would allow Nancy to bring proof that the economy caused this rape).
The Richmond Mayor, Gayle McLauglin spoke briefly.
I have not hear anything in the media from Boxer, Fienstein, or George Miller.

I've just read the article "It Could Have Been Your Daughter" Amy Siskin at the Daily Beast. Very much agree that we need to stamp out violence against girls and women!
