Richmond, Ca. High School, Gang Rape of 15 year old girl
Permalink

Dozens of people watched as she was gang raped and beaten, some took photos, laughed, and some joined in as the 15 year old girl was repeatly raped for over two hours.  They even stole her jewerly.

It certainly reminds me of the Chicago school, were the 16 year old honor student was beaten to death, and everybody joined in, and did nothing to stop it.  Acording to news,
a dance took place at the HS from 7 - 11 pm Saturday night.  She left at 9:30 to wait for
her dad to pick her up, when a male friend asked her to join in the group who had been
drinking on school grounds.  She quickly had a large amount of hard alchohol and fell over, and the attack began.   No one called police, until one person overheard the rumor, and did phone in.  One Mauel Ortega, 18, not a student was arrested, and a second 15 year student of the school was just arrested.

Senior Pres. of the HS Gina Saechao says this is bad, what if it was your sister or your mother.  (I'm beginning to wonder if making this statement has desentized our society).
It's about the 15 year old girl, not any other girl or woman!

The school board says they are trying to stay on top of safety..............there was 400 kids at the dance, 3 administrators and 4 police officers were over seeing the event. I'd say that school is not a SAFETY ZONE for it's students.  I'd say they were not looking out
for this girl, or any other girl in that school.

She was horribly and brutally raped, and beaten badly.

Outside the HS is a Bill Board:  Richmond HS, it reads welcome to Richmond HS,
what you put up on that bill board today?

I can think of one:   Weep for your fellow student

I think I will call too. I only have one objection. I think it IS about all women and girls. We are all vulnerable to this and the sad fact is that rape is an act of terrorism in that it sends out a message of fear into society. "this can be you and may very well be some time if it hasn't been already. If it has it can happen again." There is an underlying and very dangerous attitude in our society regarding rape. Misogyny in many of it's forms leads to violence of a specific kind..against gender.

This poor child is the victim this time of this horror. Once again this isn't big news. I wonder what it's going to take for this world to stop shoving this under the rug.

Calling now.

Thanks Alice......... I understand it is about girls/women, but you know everybody, including myself keep saying this, and it is not making a difference, see what I mean. We need more words for impacting our message.

By the way, when you call, they will ask you to call 510-231-1100 #0.........to talk to adminstrators. I asked the secretary why they weren't accepting and dealing with this
dangerous situation, and she told me she was told to transfer calls. There in is the problem, pass the buck.

I agree, it is about females. But, it's also about an inability to feel empathy. People who can bear witness to this kind of brutality and cruelty, and react by laughing and taking pics, apparently lack the ability to feel for a fellow human. That's a pretty scary thing - both for those were unable or unwilling to react with basic human decency to this tragedy, and for society as a whole.

Here is update:

3 more suspects have been arrested, total of 2 adults and 3 juvenils. As many 10 participated in the rape. As many as 25 watched and did nothing. One student said she had been verbally abused by her classmates in the past, making fun of her because she had a crush on a boy, because of the jeans she wore and stuff, and she barged out crying one day.

It's reported in the news that she did not suffer life threatening injuries...........I bet to differ
on this..........this young lady will have the hardest of it all in putting her life back together, especially knowning that 25 people did nothing.

The brave soul who called the police is Margarita Vargas............she had the courage, she should be protected because they (students) see her as a snitch.

From the article " I was on Emeric Avenue with some friends when some dudes walked up and were like, there's a drunk girl back there, said Raul Rubio, who brought back the news to his girlfriend. "They said she was nake, and if you want to get f...ed, go back there."

Witnesses who failed to report the crime could be charged with aiding and abetting if police can show their actions facilitated or goaded the perpetrators, said Dara Cashman, head of the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office sex crimes unit.  Passively watching the crime is not a crime itself unelss the victim is younger than 14.

Neil Smelser, a professor emeritus of sociology at UC Berkelery, said crowds in such situations often can be broken into four catergories:  those who perpertrate the action, those who actively encourage it but don't participate, those who observe without supporting or speaking out against the action, and those who object to it, and may or may not vocalize that to the rest of the group.

MY question, what about those who would have jumped in to stop it?

By the by, I did contact the executive director of Bay Area Women Against Rape.......I expressed the need for the media to stop with the "she suffered non life threatening injuries",and they are going to bring this up in their meeting regardings the 15 year old.   It happens in every newspaper across this country, she didn't
suffer.

I also requested that they offer some protection for the Vargas girl who spoke up!

I asked them when Obama was going to speak out against this sexual violence, and send  Arne Duncan to the city of Richmond?

How horrible!  What kind of a place is this?  I hope they get the names of the people who did nothing and prosecute them to the fullest.

Loving Light, please bless the mind, heart, and spirit of this precious girl, and heal the minds of those who don't know any better than to do this, or do nothing.  Please set your loving angels about her to protect and comfort her and her family at this difficult time.  Please set Your Holy Spirit over this community, to help them with the obvious counseling and teaching that will be and is desperately needed!

Building, HMG is writing a blog for TNA as we speak and we are working to get this up on TNA.  I am PM'ing you right now with some info so that you can contact me directly.

We need to make this front and center.  If our goal is to end violence against women then we need to show that society is desensitized to a woman being raped.  The example is that no one did anything to help this young woman and that makes this crime exponentially heinous.

Wrote an action alert for this site and working on a blog for both here and TNA.  I am going to edit the action alert to include name and phone number as well as address for the school.
This is priority today for me. We must stand up for this young girl.

Thank you everyone, I've blogged, I've called, I've shed tears, my rage is high. If the Women's Rape center in Oakland has a meet up on the streets of Richmond, I am on the road.

I've been reading about this incident here and finally hearing about it in the news yesterday and I just have no words to describe how disgusted I am, not only with the men who perpetuated this assault, but with the school and some members of the media (who have tried to downplay this).  For school officials to claim that they had security there that night is obscene.  They clearly didn't have security there if the rape occurred over two hours!  I heard that some of the minors are going to be tried as adults, which is good, but I want something to done about the pathetic school officials who let this go on and apparently were oblivious to it all.  I don't understand how they just didn't know it was happening.  If there was security there that night, where were they?!

I have avoided this thead from personal reasons, but have now read it. I don't know what to say.

{"she suffered non life threatening injuries"}

This enrages me. Physically she will recover. Emotionally she now faces a lifetime of pain and fear.

I am so angry that they can dismiss this so easily. I don't know what to do or how to help.
