In case I didn't say this before, I am so glad that you guys are my online friends.
I start classes tomorrow (taking, not teaching) and I have been freaking out the past few days. Having nightmares about going to class in only my underwear (SSOA said to me at least I have some sort of pants on, so that should be considered a plus, right?) and having to go to the bathroom right when the professor is explaining the most important part. I haven't taken complex analysis in over 20 years, and differential equations in over 21 years. I am freaking out! GAH!
You guys make me laugh and I am glad to have you in my life (even if it is only on a LCD screen).
Tomorrow pie will have a different meaning to me. It will represent this:
Let us know about your first day! I plan to go back to college in the Spring (I had originally planned for this Fall, but stuff got in the way) for another degree too! However, my classes will all be on-line only.
Oh, I remember differential equations . . . have fun! I actually enjoyed that class, but it has been awhile for me also.
You will make it fine.
Did you have to take the GRE again? I have to also . . . not looking forward to it. How was it?

Calico
I haven't taken the GRE's yet. Oct. 9th. I am taking this class and a Quantum Physics class next semester to get the really hard classes out of the way. I will have to take a full courseload in the fall and I want to make sure I can devote all of my effort to these classes first.
I have been studying vocabulary all summer and I am only up to the "S" words now.

You are doing the right thing. I took a couple of tough classes during my first semester for one of my degrees. It worked out perfectly, as I was able to concentrate on just them.
I want to take the test in November, but I will wait, if I don't feel prepared enough and wait until Spring. Then, start with one class during the summer. My work is on-line, so it should be convenient to take the classes at least.
Optix you know I love ya. Just don't go in there talking like me lol. I know I know I am a bad influence on ya. Ya gonna do alright. Your the only one who can get away with threatening me lol.

Now an even better reason not to get on my bad side, not only will I get all angry and end up on your doorstep but I will be shouting mathematical equations to the heavens [I will also mess up my hair for effect]. So your neighbors will ask why you had to get the crazy Einstein lady all mad.
Optix!!! You lost me at differential equations and complex analysis. I went back to grad school after more years than I care to say, and was a total wreck. Of course, I was taking nothing as difficult and your courses. I was convinced that those just graduating college would be quick learners while I would need to sit in the corner with a Dunce cap on. To my surprise, life experience actually made the course work much easier to me than recent educational experience did for the younger students. And, the many papers we had to write were not the challenge I feared.
Actually, it may just have been that I was so nervous and unsure of myself, that I over-compensated by studying my butt off. Regardless, it was a good experience. Surprisingly, more than half the class was comprised of us dinosaurs - another pleasant surprise.
Proud of you and it goes without saying, we love you too. Hope tomorrow is great!

Optix......you will be fine and everything will just fall right into place for you I have no doubt.
Let us know how the first day goes and you know you always have all of us here to root you on so when you feel the overload coming on just pop in and let us relieve your stress. LOL!

A great mental picture! Just make sure you have some pants on, for God's sake!
I've never taken calculus - my husband, who got all "As" through calculus IV - says that might be the class you're taking. Advanced statistics was bad enough.
As for the GRE, you said you didn't have to take it, but, for anyone who does and is nervous, here's what I did: I took three practice tests, setting aside the two hours or whatever it was for each test, and taking it like I was in the actual situation, i. e., no distractions or breaks.
When I took it, there was a "Logic" section. When I took the first practice test, I got a 17% in that area. Yes, you read right - SEVENTEEN PERCENT! By the time I took the actual GRE itself, after studying practice books/self-help GRE books and taking the other two tests, I was up to the 89 percentile. My point is that it's not that you aren't good in that area, it's just that you might not be familiar with the procedures required to figure things out.
Anyhoo, OM, I knitted you a lovely blueberry pie! Well, I didn't, but someone did. Hope you like blueberry.

Thanks all for your words of encouragement! And Alex, thanks for the knitted pie. Would we call that a pie cozy?
This morning was my first class and it is called "Mathematical Methods for Optics" and entails Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra. The professor is a friend of mine and from all of the students that I have polled that have taken his course, they claim he is the best teacher they have ever had (so there is hope for me).
Here are the classroom statistics: 55 students for a 45 seat small auditorium. I came in one minute early and got the last seat before they had to bring in chairs from another classroom. Out of the 55 students, there are only 8 women; 4 Caucasian and 4 Asian. There is one African American male and I know that he just graduated this past May from my university. I am the oldest female but not the oldest student. There are two men, both look in their 50's, taking the class too. 1/3 of the class is Optics students, such as myself, and the other 2/3 are Physics students.
I got my first homework assignment today too. It is due on the 14th. I gotta rewrite my class notes so that I can review everything the Prof. talked about in class. I want to get a good grade in this class so that when I apply to the PhD program by this January, they can see that I mean business.

Pie Pillow.

An "in" with the teach - way to go!

I don't doubt for a minute that they'll be quite sure you do! What is your goal, once you get your PhD?

I would like to become a college professor and researcher as well as be available to be a Scientific Adviser for our gal Hillary. I will be there for her through thick or thin. Just because I am a Pub doesn't mean I wouldn't work my behind off for her WHEN she is President.

Hillary would be fortunate to have you. And we all would be fortunate to have you both. lol.
BTW Alex, low fat pie! Now that's what I'm talking about.

Congratulations on making it through the first day of class!
Funny, I am going back to be a college professor also. I want to teach Information Systems/Computer Science.
From the colleges and universities in my state, it looks like everyone is going back to school. I have heard that some are 25%+ above last year's enrollment.

If you can swing it, the best time to go back to school is during a recession. I went back for my Masters in 91 and now timing is right for me to go back for my PhD. I will have some stiff competition from the young kids because they cannot find employment so they are staying in school. There were 200 applicants last year for 17 spots in my program, so I know that I have to turn the amp up a notch in order for me to compete. I need to be accepted as a full time student because each course is $4700 and I would need 16 of them. A full-time PhD gets a stipend and gets a waiver on tuition. The classes I am taking right now I am paying for out of pocket and have gotten some financial aid; but it is still very very expensive when you are self-employed.

Optix, this was my thinking also. With the recession, I want to have a back-up plan and furthering my education, in order to teach seems perfect.
Education is expensive! I paid out-of-pocket for my other degrees, as I didn't really qualify for financial aid and didn't want to take money that I didn't need. And, it will be the same this time around. So, I am planning carefully.
I have every faith that you will do fine! Just concentrate on your goals. And, it will be over so fast, you won't know what happened. My years in college flew by.
