With all the politicians who have had affairs recently, it's telling that this guy mentioned the Clinton/Lewinsky - not so recent - thing. He had an affair with his FRIEND'S WIFE. In discussing this, he felt it necessary to spend more time talking about Bill than himself. Way to take responsibility, John.
BTW - Add him to the list of those who condemned Bill for his actions, yet, who had some difficulty keeping their zippers up, themselves. Among this group is Newt Gengrich, who loudly and publicly condemned Bill, while also having an affair. Then there's Mark Foley (the one making passes at male pages) who shouted his condemnation of Bill from the roof tops. The list of hypocrites keeps growing.
APNewsBreak: Ensign: I did nothing 'legally wrong'
By SCOTT SONNER, Associated Press Writer Scott Sonner, Associated Press Writer – Wed Aug 19, 10:14 pm ET
FERNLEY, Nev. – Sen. John Ensign told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his affair with a friend's wife was different from former President Bill Clinton's relationship with a White House intern because he didn't lie about it under oath. "I haven't done anything legally wrong," the Nevada Republican said. "President Clinton stood right before the American people and he lied to the American people," Ensign said. "You remember that famous day he lied to the American people, plus the fact I thought he committed perjury. That's why I voted for the articles of impeachment." Ensign made the remarks before being introduced to a standing ovation from about 100 people at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in rural Fernley, about 40 miles east of Reno. Ensign opened his speech by acknowledging what he called a "distraction." "I think it would be inappropriate to start any other way than to say I'm sorry," he said. "I've said I'm sorry. I can't say I'm sorry enough. I made a big mistake in my life and I apologize once again to all of you." The luncheon was Ensign's first public appearance in his home state since acknowledging in June that he had an extramarital affair with former campaign aide Cynthia Hampton. Ensign resigned as head of the Republican Policy Committee after admitting to the affair with Hampton from December 2007 to August 2008. Hampton's husband, Doug, was Ensign's administrative assistant in his Washington, D.C., Senate office and the families were friends. Ensign's attorney has also said that Ensign's parents paid the woman and her family $96,000 after learning about the affair. Ensign once called on President Bill Clinton to resign after his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky erupted in 1998, declaring: "The truth must come out." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090820/ap_on_re_us/us_ensign_affair

I bet we are going to end up seeing more of the men responsible for the witch hunt on Bill Clinton get caught having affairs. I know more then half of those men who sat in judgement were/are having affairs.
My divorce is far enough behind me to feel comfortable saying this. When they were trying to impeach Bill, my ex was leading the charge against him. "Let's just not mention that he did the exact same thing, as well as his dad" attitude.. Hypocrits.

This issue is another reason people all over the world think Americans are backward. NOBODY in any OTHER country gives a rats patootie about the private lives of their leaders as LONG as that leader is dong a good job and even when they aren't. They do talk about issues and trash them that way. Outside of tabloids you just don't see this stuff blown all out of proportion to actual ISSUES of the day anywhere else.
It's embarrassing and stoooopid. Bill Clinton was a beloved and really great president and the right wing needed to tear him apart so Ken Starr and Rove and the rest of those henchmen went after the Clinton's in a manner I will never forgive or forget. To this DAY people are using those bastards "talking points" both on the left and right.
It was a non issue. The REAL issue was the turn around in the economy but, the republicans were mad that so many American's liked Bill Clinton when he turned things around for the better. They needed to destroy the "star" democrat.
They did it any way possible. Today the democrats are using those same tactics against other democrats. It's all distraction and baloney and it always was!
It was the nasty tactics used against Bill Clinton by making this a national issue that did damage to the country. NOT the "affair" After all Kennedy out paced Bill on that one and there was not a national "crisis" over it as there never should have been.
The republicans did the damage, NOT Bill Clinton when THEY made this a huge national "scandal"

I don't know what to say here. I don't like Clinton being draged in on these things. Clinton's case there was no big money transfers--except news people getting exclusives from Liwinsky (sp).
I guess it comes down to what individuals think of morals. I want an honest SOB that can keep sex out of politics. Is that asking too much?

I feel the same way. After all this time, Bill is still being dragged through the mud. I guess morality is a relative concept. Some in this country equate morality with sex. Pretty narrow thinking, imo. Bill was a great president. His personal short comings didn't prevent him from doing an excellent job for this country. As others said, the constant investigations, costing in excess of 40 million dollars hampered his ability to do his job. Still, he did more for this country than almost anyone in history. Partisan BS motivated the continuing, sustained attack on Bill and Hill. It's way past time for a viable third party. Maybe then, we'll begin to hold pols accountable for their effectiveness as government officials - not for private, personal behavior.
