Model Liskula Cohen Wins Court Battle with Google to Learn Blogger's Identity

Anonymous Blogger Called Cohen a 'Skank and a 'Ho'

She had graced the cover of Vogue and found success as a model. But Liskula's Cohen latest achievement came in the courtroom.

Horrified by the hateful words of an anonymous blogger, Cohen took Google to court in hopes of forcing the company to reveal the writer's identity -- and won.

 

"Why should anybody let it go? If somebody attacks somebody on the street you're not going to let it go … why should I just ignore it?" Cohen told "Good Morning America" today. "I couldn't find one reason to ignore it."

 

Google initially refused to unmask the unidentified writer, who Cohen, 36, claimed defamed her by posting words like "skanky", "ho", and "whoring" below her photographs. The IP address turned over by Google revealed that the blogger was an acquaintance of Cohen's .

 

Cohen said it was a woman she hadn't seen in about a year, but who was a regular fixture at dinners and parties, but she was not, as she feared, someone who was close to her.

This is a very important case.  I hope that it sets an example and that others follow suit in revealing the identity of maligners on the internet.

There should be more internet laws. Everyone of these interent places like Facebook, Google, etc., should have a clause that reads to the effect, if you threaten anyone--your information will be turned over to the law.

Is that too hard for them to implement? Then maybe it would stop the "secret" world of attackers.

This is great news for the likes of HRC and Palin who are maligned and slandered by bloggers. It's one thing to be nasty and mean, but some of these bloggers take it to a whole different level. If the target of the blogger feels threaten and has the grounds for an order of protection or the accusations qualify as slander; the identity of the blogger should be known.

I am surprised google did anything! You Tube is a war zone of hateful remarks that are so outside the boundaries of what ought to be acceptable in society that it's full of sociopathic comments. I got death threats last year during the primaries more than once. It's high time this sort of thing was stopped!! On top of that someone was using my real name and location to make posts online AS ME, that were utterly disgusting for everyone to find and see. This sort of thing HAS to stop and google really needs to get with the program here. Anything that would be an attack in person should be considered the same online.

Be watchful of your hate on the internet

I have been away from the internet for a bit. I strongly suggest that you take some time from it as well, it calm the soul. We are surrounded by information as well as bully-style behavior here on the web and it is about time that we all raise the bar on our behavior. In case you don't think that it is necessary, think again. I was watching GMA this morning and came across this little bit of historic legal precedent involving a blogger who "thought" they could defame someone without any retaliation because they had anonymity behind the internet curtain. You can find the GMA story here. End of the story is that the supermodel who was being defamed by a secret blogger gained access to the identity of the blogger by suing Google, and WON! It turned out that she knew the person who was blogging horrible, untrue, things about her on the internet. She plans to pursue suing the individual.

There will be other legal precedents in the near future where those who feel they are above the law because they have a secret username to hide behind. There will now be cracks in their foundation and their internet hosts, service providers, etc. will not be able to keep you secret for very long. Defamation is clear when you post derrogatory language about someone or reveal private information without their consent. Be very, very careful that you watch your manners or watch your back.
