Hillary Clinton: I'm Secretary of State, Not Bill (FOX 8/10/09) Hillary Smacks Down Sexist Question in the Congo

I love it - Go Hillary!

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's temper flared on Monday when a Congolese university student asked her for her husband's thinking on an international financial matter.

"You want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" she replied incredulously when the male student asked her what "Mr. Clinton" thought of World Bank concerns about a multi-billion-dollar Chinese loan offer to the Congo.

"My husband is not secretary of state, I am," an obviously annoyed Clinton said sharply. "If you want my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I am not going to be channeling my husband."

The question was left unanswered as the moderator of the event quickly moved on.

Apparently, the person's question wasn't translated properly.  In any case, the media will probably make a big deal about this.  I can't blame her for responding how she did though.  First of all, she's right and secondly she was probably a little curt because she's tired from her trip and everything that has been going on  lately (Bill's trip to N. Korea and so forth).

Its already started.  Several articles said she was rude. One said she was cranky because she is overshadowed by Obama and Bill and some such nonsense.  The question was translated wrong perhaps but perhaps not.

Yep, Chris Matthews and CNN had it on at 6:00PM.  She tired by now.  But she was right.  However I hate the news media they are loving this.

Her response to what she thought she was being asked was SPOT ON!  I wouldn't have been as nice.

Ah, sexism is alive and well around the world!

Having said that, I think she should have kept her cool and used a little humor.

I almost want to keep this to myself, but as the months wear on, I am beginning to wonder if people were right in cautioning Hillary not to accept the SOS offer. Is she being "marginalized"? I mean, during the first few months, I thought she was just graciously allowing Obama to have the limelight -- or maybe following orders -- but as time goes by, I'm beginning to wonder...

Hi Carolyn, so nice to see you here.
I just think she is very tired. This morning on Morning Joe they all felt that she is very tired and in Congo they treat women just awlful and that was part of her discussion at the press meeting.  She very passionate about womens rights.

I do not think she being marginalized at all I think she been getting very high marks. She loves her job and she trying to make a difference.  That said, She got ticked and after being tired she said it like she felt.  It's so hard to be smiling and charming all the time and apparently this press reporter hit a nerve.

It seems the U.S. media is as backward and reactionary as ever and many people eat it up with a spoon.

The clip should be played with the full question. Asked the way it was many, many women would have responded the exact same way as they should. I think it is disgraceful the way the media focuses on this having a rampant b.s. field day and doesn't spend nearly enough time talking about how important and difficult this work was in the Congo. The stories she had to listen in the places she had to do it were horrific. She's bringing attention to the entire world to this horrible problem.

Obama has made many, many mistakes..while they are reported on they are not jumped on with this much "glee"

I don't see this as a mistake, I don't think the question was "mis translated" at ALL. Why? Because in the second part of the question it is clear the person is talking about "Mr. Clinton" They've said it was "mistranslated" to cover their butts. Has the media picked up on that angle??? Hardly.

I loved it that she spoke up. Why shouldn't she?? And why does she have to be perfection personified every single last second when Obama doesn't seem to have to be? It's the same old, same old.

For months now she's been doing a stellar job in that position...I think it is INSULTING to women to have our press infer that she feels over shadowed by Bill or Obama...how disgusting.

I've just about had it with the entire U.S. media on all levels.

Of course they were going to use it against her, if a male S.O.S. stood up there and was asked what his "wife" thought instead of himself people would not have such a big field day over a sharp answer.

There will never be a strong woman as president in the United States with the prevailing attitudes the way they are now. People need to make the media STOP this circus of coverage and start REPORTING on FACTUAL and IMPORTANT work and issues.

Our media is the laughing stock of the world, not Hillary Clinton.

Hillary was my hero all over again when she responded like she did. I don't give a good GD if the interpreter screwed up the question and meant to say obama instead of Bill. It was still sexist. Who the hell cares what obama thinks? I want to hear what Hillary thinks.

When she answered like that, she answered for every one of us women who has walked in their husband's shadow, struggling to make our own way, and to get the proper attention to our accomplishments - accomplishments that are our own and have nothing to do with who we are married to.

So, I say it again - GO HILLARY!

I believe she is being marginalized and sidelined. I think Hillary is starting to plan right now. She is getting fed up with not being President.

Let's not forget those women she just interviewed in those camps were watching her. Her response showed them her strength and theirs too.
