The Two Faces of Condi and Michelle (RCP Blog 8/1/09)

This is bit of a touchy subject, but since the President has declared we're currently in the middle of another "teachable moment" on race and the Attorney General has urged me not to be a coward when it comes to discussing the issue, I figure I might as well dive right in.

A few months ago I was struck by this illustration of Condi Rice by Edward Sorel that appeared on the Vanity Fair web site:

condi1

Now, it goes without saying that editorial cartoonists drive home their arguments using lines instead of words: caricature and exaggeration are the tools of the trade. And it's also not a particularly stunning revelation to say that some liberals cartoonists have no qualms resorting to overt displays of racism when it suits their ideological needs.

Secretary Rice, who was at the time the most powerful African-American woman in the world (perhaps excluding Oprah), certainly bore the brunt of such treatment; she was called a "house ******" in a cartoon by Ted Rall; Garry Trudeau had President Bush give her the nickname "Brown Sugar" in one of his Doonesbury strips; and syndicated cartoonist Pat Oliphant walked away with the booby prize for this:

condi16

It would be unfair to say all - or even most - cartoonists treated Secretary Rice this poorly. On the other hand, Oliphant was hardly an exception. In cartoon after cartoon, both in America and around the world, Rice was portrayed in the worst possible light. (See a sample of what I'm talking about here.)

Now stop and imagine what would happen if a cartoonist at a major media outlet were to draw a similar rendition of Michelle Obama with all of her features exaggerated in the most unflattering - and, let's be honest, racist - way.  The person would would be drummed out the business in days - if not sooner.

But, unlike with Secretary Rice, there are no such unflattering cartoons of Michelle Obama because no one dares draw them. Instead, we get cartoons like the following by Ed Wexler from a recent issue of US News & World Report:

michelleobama

If you sift through the editorial cartoons on Michelle Obama, you see much the same thing (I've collected a few examples here). Indeed, the only cartoon that even comes close to being unflattering toward Michelle was a deliberate piece of satire by Barry Blitt that ran on the cover of the New Yorker in June 2008. And we all remember the hand wringing and gnashing of teeth that caused among liberals who couldn't believe anyone would do such a thing.

First of all it is the liberals who tend to be the most racist. They pretend they are not but if a black person moves into their neighborhood then they fall apart. I was very proud of Dr. Rice and the fact that she was SOS.
Another fact is that I believe Oblahblah wouldn't know racism if it bit him in the butt. Third of all this whole thing was the most stupid story in the world.
the white "racist" cop wasn't racist because ANY cops would have arrested Gates. Lets break it down. Had Gates kept his big mouth shut and not yelled at the cops then he would have NOT been arrested.  For those of you not aware of this that talking to the cops in this way can range from Disorderly Conduct to assult.  It is against the law to curse at the police in my state they consider that assult.
Henry Gates was treated well by this police officer as he was clearly not beaten.  I am also POed that the black officer was basically ignored by the Press and POTUS and yes there are some "racist" black cops but like the racist white ones they tend to also abuse black subjects.
Gates and Obama have never had a run in with a real racist cop or believe me neither of these idiots would have made this incident public.  Gates was the one who was wrong in this situation.
We have real Police Brutility out there and this ain't one of them.  Its much ado about nothing.

The American department of propaganda known as our media sells the fairytale the way they want you to see. I disagreed with Condi Rice on many things, and to be totally honest I was appalled by some of her actions. HOWEVER, as a woman I was proud of her climb and accomplishments. She had her beliefs and she followed those. They were not mine..but, truth be told she is a far better role model for young women than Michelle patient dumping Obama ever was. Michelle Obama has never been called out on her b.s. the way Condi was raked over the coals. Michelle Obama caused deaths in dumping those patients which was HER idea to change that hospital to doing that to her own neighbors and to poor black people seeking care. That alone ought to be brought to the light of day not to mention her buying and then closing down that factor thus throwing a whole town of largely hispanic workers OUT of work and thus shutting down that town in Colorado.

So for shame ministry of propaganda...not all of us are totally blind to your sickening brainwashing ways.

I don't like that they portrayed Condi that way. It was very degrading. I also hated how Hillary was usually portrayed as something akin to a fat dwarf.

MO and a lot of other wealthy African Americans often expolit the poor and think that its ok.  Its not ok.  They are no different then any other ethnic group who exploit the poor  now the people from the Middle East they do not exploit the poor people.   They do not over charge nor do they act like we all steal or tell us to hurry up and buy.  No she is not a role model she is someone who uses people.  BO lets the slum lords take over the slum he represents and my sister wants to know why I deslike that man.

I think your sister should go an interview the people who had to live in those buildings while Obama not only did nothing but, HELPED Rezco to keep those slums going in that condition. A four year old little boy died because Rezco would not get a big iron gate fixed out front of one of those buildings, it fell on the boy and Obama KNEW about it and STILL kept funding and protecting Rezco. What makes me so mad is that people praise this man when if it was anybody else they would have their head on a platter and rightly so. I've got a sister who can go with her...cuz one of mine still thinks he is all that and a bag o chips too.

So I guess the lives of those poor people who had no heat in the winter, and rats as big as cats there, and broken everything including no running water, and the death of an innocent child just doesn't move the world in their emotions anymore like a big fat speech does. I guess that makes up for everything that man has done in life to hurt people.

Why is it so hard for some people to face the fact that Obama is a bad man. A lot of bad people are "charming" and can speak well, that's how they keep fooling everyone...

I worry about the damage he is going to do in our future now..a long time ago, I thought if Hillary lost he would be my next choice to vote for. I mean a LONG time ago..I WANTED him to be a good person. But I won't sit and lie to myself in the face of facts...he's a bad person, and his wife is not much better...it's a sad shame but, that's who is really is.

I also believe that ACORN exploits the poor. I've seen their meetings on the news, and it seems they build momentum, only to let them down. And, they don't see it.

They have the poor people do the marching, the protesting, but if a law is broken, they throw them to the wolves.

ACORN promotes welfare. That is my view of the organization. It wouldn't be what it is today if they didn't feed on the poor.

Oh ACORN for sure exploits the poor and doesn't pay them a lot of the time. Sets them up to commit crimes then when ACORN is caught they let the poor person they hired and talked into things take the fall for it all...they always respond "Well, so and so employee acted on their own and we have nothing to do with that."

The people at the very top make a LOT of money and some have been embezzlers. Just another organization claiming to do certain things, and being everything they are not. Indeed, they set up a cult like atmosphere and if you question a thing about them from inside you are ridiculed and ostracized even if you are right or are trying to make things better.

How do I know? I once volunteered for them a long time ago when I thought they were something they surely are NOT. The minute I read their Alinsky tactics in the "training" I was out of there. I wasn't comfortable with it at ALL. They don't like it when you see right through them either.
