TOPIC: 911 Caller in Gates Incident Says She Was Unfairly Called a 'Racist' Lucia Whalen addressed reporters (7-27-09) fox new
A clearly distressed Lucia Whalen addressed reporters at a press conference in an effort to clear her name after the city released the 911 tape. It revealed that Whalen did not identify either of the men she thought she saw trying to break into Gates' home as black, even though an initial police report said she did.
The woman who made the 911 call that launched America into a national debate on race said Wednesday that she was unfairly called a "racist" after she reported a possible break-in at the Cambridge, Mass., home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.
A clearly distressed Lucia Whalen addressed reporters at a press conference in an effort to clear her name after the city released the 911 tape. It revealed that Whalen did not identify either of the men she thought she saw trying to break into Gates' home as black, even though an initial police report said she did.
"When I was called racist and I was a target of scorn and ridicule because of the things I never said, the criticisms hurt me as a person, but it also hurt the community of Cambridge," Whalen said.
"Now that the tapes are out, I hope people can see that I tried to be careful and honest with my words," she said. "It never occurred to me that the way that I reported what I saw be analyzed by an entire nation."
Whalen said repeatedly in the July 16 call that she didn't have a good vantage point and could not see what the two men trying to get into the home looked like.
When pressed by a dispatcher on whether the men were white, black or Hispanic, Whalen said one of them might have been Hispanic.
The two men Whalen saw trying to force their way into the home turned out to be Gates, who lives there, and his driver. Gates was arrested by Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley for disorderly conduct, but charges were later dropped.
Whalen's attorney, Wendy Murphy, seized the opportunity Wednesday to criticize President Obama's invitation to host both Gates and Crowley for a beer summit at the White House.
"The three highly trained guys who reacted badly are getting together for a beer," she said. "But the one person whose actions have been exemplary will be at work tomorrow in Cambridge."
"I don't know -- maybe it's a guy thing. She doesn't like beer anyway," she said.
Murphy said the incident spiraled into a media sensation because of the "overreaction of three men" -- which Murphy said included the response from the president.
"I'm proud to introduce you to the one person who didn’t overreact," she said.
Obama said during a press conference last week that the Cambridge police had "acted stupidly" when they arrested Gate, his friend, after he showed them identification verifying his residence. But the president later said he chose his words badly when he reacted to Gates' arest.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that Obama will drink Bud Light, Gates will drink Red Stripe, and Crowley will drink Blue Moon when the three men meet for a drink at the White House on Thursday.
The president had reportedly phoned Crowley, who suggested the three men sit down for a beer. The president said he liked the idea, and Gates concurred when Obama phoned him next.
Of course she was upset. Who wants to be called a racist. She probably voted for Obama and believed anyone who didn't was a racist. Now she has to deal with the fact that she has been labeled a racist. It has just dawned on her, as it did us last year, that it doesn't matter who you are or what you stand for --- it only matters what they call you. And once you are branded a racist the hate filled agenda driven activists show no mercy. It's the race card played and reverse racism in action. Something she thought could never happen to her.
See the 911 tape video above she dose not say black men.
Yes, this is interesting that this women is being vilified and its all make up time for O and the guys with a beer.
She is portugeese not white.
But her race should not make a difference at all. Thousands of people call 911 if they suspect something look suspicious thousands some are found to be nothing wrong and some are found to have saved lives.
Would any one want to get involved now we know this women is made the object of racist since she was just trying to alert authorities there may be a brake in?
This just awful. I was watching FOX to hear the 911 call and the unfolding events that were taking place. Hope the radicals are happy, because we're not.
Indeed it is! Talk of being crucified as a racist! You are asked and you respond with mentioning a skin color and instantly you are presumed guilty of racism? Or is it only if it is one specific color that you are not presumed guilty?
I wonder if I am allowed to say the pencil tip is black; I might be accused of racism in this country!!! Oh, they are allowed to ask me a description, and I am allowed to answer it, but only so long as I don't call it black?
Perhaps it is time to find a new word for the color black that is distinct from the color of race-based segment.
We are in "mixed color" company here. How about we come up with a word? I mean we need to separate out the two words.. and we cannot use the "N" word even if it is the word for the color black in that language.
Let's propose some color names... Come on, now, stay with me on this... Hmm...
OR, let's describe someone without using the color. Afterall, they are only telling the cops.. They can use identifying features different from color, correct? Yeh, sure, that will help law enforcement!
Here is the perspective from the professor: Why is the color in the set of questions asked anyway? (SATIRE)
What is the Women's Issue in this? Did the media ignore the set of facts when the news first come out that it was a woman caller in that story, one who has a skin of some color or the other? Certainly seems to be the first I have heard of it. It is easier to crucify her because she is a woman? Or because she is a (oh that color word) brown woman?
When the media stands in judgment of one social issue over another we have a real problem, folks.
Some day, we have to let the REALITY come into play, and recognize that color and shape and size and gender are all parts of REALITY.
As long as we remain hung up on the colors, we will never find gender equality and fairness.
How about some apologies and make-up for the vilification that this good samaritan has had to live through lately? ..OR is it the message that if you see some black figure budging a door or someone asks you for help with your cellphone, you just press the "OPT OUT" button?? I mean, it may be your job and all your social standing on the line with this, you know?
Oh, that's too bad! THERE IS NO WOMAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!! And for who is in there, this is simply not a good enough photo opportunity! And of course, who cares about looking at facts before making statements and taking sides... (Perhaps that applies only to Soldier Ryan who died. Or possibly the internal revolution in Iran.) I mean, you are the President for excuse me, 50%+ of the country? Wait, what's the percentage again? Yes, it is a black icon. Black for the bleakness of outlook for the USA. Did you just call me a racist?

What if you feel that the President does not care about female aspect of this? - The president during the campaign did bird flips, dandruff flicks and weird knife twist gestures in relation to his female opponent - looks at women's bottom during travel - forgets to wish mother's day wishes - thinks signing a bill on women's pay that women worked for is enough to make a social difference.
And given this, I dont expect "empathy" from the President towards the plight of the FEMALE good samaritan (except perhaps to highlight her color perhaps). Frankly, I do not think he cares about the "other side of the story" except one that gives the race aspects the highlight.
Given this, Here is a question:
QUESTION: You have just witnessed what appears to be a burglary. What would you do if you are yourself: 1. colored 2. female 3. both Would you (a) Make a phonecall to report what appears to be a burglary or (b) Adopt Laissez Faire - let it just happen..
Before I heard that tape, I would have made a phonecall. And, I am quite bold and all about just and fair society. Tell you what, given all I know now, I am not touching the phone.
America just went down a notch.

The minute you call 911 your information is recorded you name and address if calling from a land line. This information is provided by the telephone company's for emergency services.
If someone from a home dials 911 and hangs up, the protocol is to send police to home to investigate.
For Cell phones the numbers are recorded and and geo map comes up with location of cell phone caller no name appears but the cell phone company name appears the emergency personal will want your name all 911 calls can be made public and and effort is launched to find the caller. If you do not give your name the cell phone number is recorded. If need be they will contact you.
If you call 911 you will be asked all the questions this women was asked as protocol.
There is no such thing as Anonymous if there is an accident they will want the caller as a witness.

What was racist before Obama and last year is racist now. That's the difference. I don't know what the purpose of the beer for this is one of the silliest stories I have ever heard. That man is glad these police officers didn't beat him upside his head for disrespecting the police like that. Had that man lived in the ghetto he would have been beaten for that behavior and for real this is just another way that instead of concertrating on real issues involving "black people" are ignored for this petty crap. Sorry dude but I don't feel sorry for you you got arrrested for mouthing off at the cops and guess what that is illegeal deal with that and move on. Stop worrying about the white man and concertrate on uplifting the ghettos which this man never visits nor does he have much respect for ghetto folk You know how people here are ticked off at now for not supporting Sarah Palin and half defending Hillary I feel the same way about the so called "leaders" in the black community ignoring the ghetto people and actually acting embarrassed. I am as through with people like that.
From what I understand, this Gates man was arrested for disorderly conduct. The police arrive and he pitches the "you target me because I am black" fit.
This woman saw someone trying to break into her neighbor's home. She called 911. The right thing to do. I wonder what they would say about her, had it been a real burglar, and she had not called? They would call her a racist "for not calling because her neighbor is black".
She was being a good neighbor and gets blasted.
