Meet the Press routinely posts videos and transcripts of their shows.

Here is the transcript of the July 26 show (today, with Secretary of State Clinton)

Here is the video (in several chunks)

It's highly unusual for MTP to have a single guest for the entire hour - it's definitely an indication of her stature that they would do so for her.

I want her to be the first female president in my lifetime. I also want at least 5 female presidents in my life.

LOL, I think this was the question the reporter wanted her to take a cheap shot at Sarah Palin, but she declined. Told ya she didn't fit in with the rest of the Obama cabinet.

If you watched her respond to that question in Thailand - that she does not anticipate running again - I think, in my humble opinion, that our girl was not telling the truth - she almost stuttered a bit before her answer - so uncharacteristic of Hillary - that tells me she has been thinking about another run.

I, for one, am preparing my life to be able to commit to doing everything I can to get her elected.  I hope to act as a state leader for her campaign.  If I have to wait until 2016, then so be it.

It is too soon to tell if she will run again.

And, it is too soon for her to "show her cards", if she is planning on it.  Time will tell.

She will make the right decision when the time comes.

Hillary is always very impressive.  We get substance with her, and oratory with Obama. sigh.

The only possible way I see Hillary running in 2012 - remote as it may be - is that Obama tanks in the polls and his numbers stay a sustained low, kind of like Jimmy Carter.  In that scenario, party "insiders" would likely approach Hillary and beg her to run for the nomination, sort of like with Ted Kennedy, and in that way try and have a chance to keep the presidency within the democratic party.

"A Woman in the White House?"

Asked about the prospect of a woman winning the presidency during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton responded: "I'm not going to pretend that running for president as a woman is not daunting....and it is....probably a path that doesn't appeal to a lot of women even in elective office because it is so difficult."

Clinton's comments -- coupled with the resignation of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) over the weekend -- got us to thinking about the dearth of female politicians in the political world at the moment who are actively discussed as presidential mettle.

Clinton was widely regarded as the best hope women had to see one of their own elected to the White House; she was well-known, had a huge political machine at her disposal, pots of campaign cash to spend and was widely seen as up to the job by the American public.

"Meet" host David Gregory asked Clinton the "if not you, who" question to which Clinton responded: "I am convinced -- and I don't know if she is elective office right now or preparing to run for office -- but there is a woman who I am hoping will be able to achieve that."

But, who?

A quick glance at the roster of women currently serving in the Senate or as governor -- the ranks from which presidential candidates typically emerge -- turns up 17 senators and six governors.

Of that group, just one -- Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) -- has ever been seriously mentioned as a national candidate. But, Hutchison seems set on returning to the Lone Star State full time with her 2010 primary challenge to Gov. Rick Perry (R). If she wins that race, Hutchison would theoretically be in position to run but she would be 69 years old on election day 2012 and putting together a national campaign would be hard to imagine.

Outgoing Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm was widely seen as a rising star with the Democratic party when she was elected in 2002 but the cratering Michigan economy has diminished her appeal significantly. Also, she's Canadian -- not that there's anything wrong with that! -- making her ineligible to be president.

That leaves 21 other women -- none of whom are actively discussed as potential national candidates. The best possibility is Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) who could be appealing given her ability to win statewide in Missouri. But, McCaskill will almost face a serious re-election fight in 2012 (Jim Talent, anyone?) and has to get through that race before she can be seriously considered.

Down a level to the House, the pickings are also slim. (Historically running from the U.S. House is a death wish for presidents; the last -- and only -- sitting member of Congress to win the White House was James Garfield in 1880.)

The most obvious choice would be Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) who has a strong political pedigree (her grandfather was governor, her father was a longtime state legislator), the ability to win votes in a red state and is young enough at 38 to spend the time needed to build the sort of network she would need to run for national office. But, Herseth Sandlin declined an expected run for governor in 2010 -- delaying an expected ascent into a more high-profile office. If Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) decides against seeking a fourth term in 2014, Herseth Sandlin would be the obvious choice.

Among the candidates currently running for statewide office in 2010, there are few obvious choices. Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) and former New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte (R) are each young, highly regarded and running for the Senate; at the gubernatorial level, former eBay President Meg Whitman (R) and Florida CFO Alex Sink (D) might be possibilities if they can get elected.

But, that is far down the road. The simple fact is that Clinton was by far the best positioned woman to win the nation's highest office and there is no one like her in the political minor leagues at the moment.

Could Palin be that person? Perhaps, although her high unfavorable ratings with Independents and Democrats complicate any path for her to the White House even if she decided to run.

Are there up and coming women we missed? Feel free to offer their names in the comments section below.

My thoughts exactly.  And, I have heard this scenario mentioned.  It is plausible that it could happen.  Just a wait and see game right now.

Xyndau, Thank you. Great topic to discuss and you have brought an excellent article to motivate the discussion.

It is worth repeating that the picture and especially that sub-title.

Hillary Rodham Clinton was the best chance ever for a woman to win the White House. Photo by William B. Plowman -- NBC Newswire via Getty Images

I believe she still Is the best chance for a woman to win the White House for the next couple of general elections. Personally, I would rather see Hillary Clinton there than all other possibilities, but I know there are obstacles... and also that there are some great talented women leaders in the mix presented in that article..

So, let's look at the other options we have been presented.

sarah-palin.jpg
Sarah Palin (R) - She gave a very good speech past Sunday in her closing remarks on the governor's job. Honestly, all optics aside, I believe it was the correct move politically (the 7/3 statement could have positioned it better).  She has a big important speech coming up in the Reagan Library in the near future, and I will be looking to see how the media and the people respond to her.

She has work to do to get the news cycles before the day begins in Alaska.  Moving to DC may be difficult for her given her family ties. But she is truly a free person right now, so much so that she can charter her own course to the top.  She is unconventional and with the right support structure she can ascend fast.

sen-kay-bailey-hutchison.jpg
Sen.Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) grew up in La Marque, Texas, and attended the University of Texas and UT Law. In 1990, she successfully ran for Texas state treasurer, and in 1993, in a special election held after Senator Lloyd Bentsen resigned to become secretary of the treasury, she was elected to the U.S. Senate. Reelected a year later, and again in 2000 and 2006, she has proudly followed in the footsteps of her great-great-grandfather Charles Taylor, whose signature can be found on the Texas Declaration of Independence, but with one added distinction: She was the first woman ever elected to represent Texas in the Senate. She is seriously running the campaign for re-election in 2010.  A dignified, graceful, professional and courageous person, she is well positioned if she declares candidacy in January 2011. But her conservative social views and unfortunately her age may play against her.. but if Obama trips up more in the coming years, it may actually help her to be the seasoned judgment that runs against the incumbent.

u1_granholm.jpg1031081607_M_granholm_jennifer.jpg081215_granholm_ideas.jpg
Jennifer Ganholm (D-MI) appeared on Meet the Press in December 2008. She was impressive as a communicator. She has tremendous personal appeal. Likeability factor will play very strongly in her favor. She is from the severely affected Michigan. She has focused on farmers in Michigan and has tried to progress non-auto businesses a lot and that will be a good story. But the fact that Michigan is doing so poor may hurt her. Also you will see that as they did in the Meet the Press, she will be viewed and projected as big government person who was in favor of government bailout of auto industry. See this clip - Granholm and Romney on Meet the Press

McCaskill,%20Claire.jpg
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)  was practically viewed as an Obama surrogate; she will get backing from Obama suporters. However, more recently, she has also been quite outspoken against the O Administration proposals that are far out left field. So, it is possible that she may also get some resistance from O supporters. She has also made a strategic mistake in not backing Hillary Clinton and Hillary supporters are likely to know that; but will it play out? Unlikely because if she runs and wins the primaries, she will have Hillary's backing. They worked together on equal wage amendment.

A local townhall meeting of Sen.McCaskill from April 2009 shows that she is comfortable in her skin as a female leader - a quality that is increasingly appealing to the professional female who is also quite comfortable as a mom at the kitchen counter.  The fact that she is from MO, the heartland of USA will help her to some degree.

Her run for re-election to senate in 2012 against Jim Talent is indeed one to watch closely because they are diametrically opposed on the stem cell research position.  While her position is really about research, if there is no "market" to implement it given the healthcare plan that is on the table, her position may loose steam right off the gate in her campaigns. This is certainly one to watch, including who supports McCaskill and who supports Talent (and whether Palin campaigns for Talent).

stephanie_herseth_sandlin_official_photo_portrait_2007.jpg
Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD)
in the House is a relative unknown from a state with few electoral votes. But she is a bundle of energy and has great communication skills. She is strongly in favor of growing bio economy and I do believe this will play positively to her messages. The trouble here though, is the fact that she is a strong and very vocal supporter of Global Warming Tax... and that pretty much will take her out quickly, depending upon what happens with the Cap & Trade that is now in the Senate. Besides, the country will want a strong, well experienced hand and may view her as another young person on the heals of a young O administration that has faltered a lot and hugely changed course (mostly for the worse).

Among the above, I see the best potential in Hillary Clinton.. and the second best in Jennifer Granholm... I will wait to see how Sarah Palin does in Reagan Library and the reaction from MSM and the general public in the coming weeks and may revise my view on this.

Well, first of all I hope she can run again, but honestly I think all that depends from how Obama will be President.

Angelica, that worries me to.  She is needed so badly as SOS and has been doing the whole world so much good.  But, will the great things she does carry her against BHO and his policies?

I include her in my rosary every day and hope she has done the right thing and that she's safe.  I'm keeping my hope in high mode for her.

I think - if you watched her response to this question in Thailand - that she had a deer in headlights look for just a fleeting second - which tells me that she does have thoughts about running again - she may not have decided when - i.e. 2012 or 2016, but I think we will finally have our chance to have her as our first female President.  Can't wait for that day.

We should all prepare our lives so that we can clear our schedule when she does run, and so we can help the campaign in any way necessary.    We cannot let it slip away a second time.

Yes, I noticed rather that her guards went up... she has boxed away that part.. it is something good executives do to manage risks.. compartmentalizing..  and she seems to do that extremely well; I saw her do the same thing for example when she was asked question regarding Pakistan while she was in Inda - although it was an expected question, she had a tiny bit of the same look - it is her prepared answer coming up.  Yes, she has given it some thought.

There is a chance in 2012 - (see an article I posted earlier today with comparison to RFK) - and that would certainly explain the knit-picking that has begun and all the questions.

She is the best we have got.  Yes, I would set aside some time.  Well... A lot of time. LOL.  She deserves that support and then some.
