Back in July, Patrick Edaburn blogged on The Moderate Voice about California’s Supreme Court turning majority female (this became reality just this week ). Today, with Ohio Governor Ted Strickland appointment of his former running mate, Yvette McGee Brown, to Ohio’s Supreme Court, my state will join that club. She will join three women already on the Court. You can read more here .
I’ve got a note into a couple of folks to find out which other states have female majority top courts and will update when I learn. Right now, in addition to Ohio come January, it looks like California, North Carolina, Tennessee, Washington (state) and Michigan for sure. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has a nominee in waiting who would make his court majority female and the District of Columbia’s high court is majority female . So, it’s a handful – and still way rare . Remember Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s quote:
“How many women would be enough?” Sawyer asked.
“Nine,” Ginsburg replied with a smile. “There’ve been nine men there for a long time, right? So why not nine women?”
McGee Brown will also be the first African-American to ever be on the Ohio Supreme Court.
=====================
Very good news. I just hope they are mostly pro-women's equality. Cannot assume that they are just because they are women.
