Gates says Hillary could certainly do his job, but her abilities and skills are particularly applicable and valuable to her current position.  Hillary says she likes the job she has. 

Of course, we know she's best suited for the position of POTUS.

Gates, Clinton discuss defense chief job

Defense Secretary Bob Gates said Tuesday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton certainly has the skills to do his job. But, Gates added, Clinton brings special strengths to the job of being the United States's top diplomat that are not part of the Defense chief portfolio.

"Sure," Gates said, when asked if Clinton could do his job, in a joint interview with Clinton on ABC's Good Morning America that was taped in Australia Tuesday.
But Gates added, "I will say this, I think that one of the great strengths that Hillary brings to the job as secretary of state is as spokesperson for the United States around the world. That's not the role of 
secretary of defense." 

"I have made it clear I love the job that I have," Clinton said responding to a question about what she would do if asked to be Defense Secretary.

The comments by Obama's top two cabinet officials suggest they are leaning away from floating Clinton as a likely successor to Gates. Gates has said he plans to step down from the Defense Secretary job sometime in 2011.

Separately, Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to meet with former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) at his Naval Observatory residence Tuesday morning -- Clinton and Biden's usual Tuesday morning breakfast date when Clinton is not traveling. Hagel currently serves as the co-chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board.
