WASHINGTON — Nearly 20 years after Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Justice Thomas’s wife has called Ms. Hill, seeking an apology.
In a voice mail message left at 7:31 a.m. on Oct. 9, a Saturday, Virginia Thomas asked her husband’s former aide-turned-adversary to make amends. Ms. Hill played the recording, from her voice mail at Brandeis University, for The New York Times.
“Good morning Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas,” it said. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband.”
Ms. Thomas went on: “So give it some thought. And certainly pray about this and hope that one day you will help us understand why you did what you did. O.K., have a good day.”
(1) believe in your husband ------- Logical action: Forget Anita Hill's statements and move on
(2) believe Anita Hill's words may have some truth in it --------Logical action: Decide to forgive your husband OR Not forgive your husband
Those two seem like the two logical choices. Of course, the actions can vary.
But to believe (1) and seek Anita Hill's apology... Nah, that just does not compute, especially when she has suggested that via the media and gotten a response.
If she really wanted to stretch an olive branch, she would have dones so without demanding apology on a voice message. Frankly the transcript that I read does nto sound like an olive branch at all. Do you? Well, tone could make a difference... but the words do not convey olive branch to me. Talk of elite...
And, it was early morning on Saturday. Hmmmmm. A bit bothered, you think?
Yep! Anita Hill's testimony had a real ring of truth to it... It would be difficult to forget for anyone. Geez!

As you noted, it's hard to imagine why Mrs. Thomas, after all this time, would suddenly seek an apology from Hill. My first thought was that possibly, she just had some minor psychiatric condition which caused her to obsess and replay past events in her mind.
But, maybe she has plenty of reason to want a little revenge on her husband, and knew this was a way in which to get the Anita Hill issue (and maybe indiscretions with other women) in the public eye, again.
Whatever the reason, Judge Clarence Thomas may finally be getting his due. Mrs. Thomas may be smarter than we thought.

Hey freespirit, I didnt see you post this earlier...
Yeah, I wondered about that too. Her call appeared to be quite out of the blue, but apparently she has brought it up before with reporters.
I thought she may have suspected there is an element of truth to what Anita Hill had stated in her sworn testimony... and that may have been bothered Mrs.Thomas.. and may be she was looking for a closure. But really! Come on! She didn't expect Anita Hill to say that she she made it all up?
Yeah, may be more believable that she wanted to find a way to open the door for more of the story to come out. Dont know.. even that is so odd! But yes, depending on if she had a goal in mind, it may have been a clever way to bring forth an expose!
