US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ended her two-day Balkan tour on Wednesday, leaving the Kosovo capital Pristina for Brussels, local media reported.
During her stay in Pristina earlier, Clinton met with Kosovo leaders, urging them to start talks with Serbia as soon as possible despite a political crisis over the president’s recent resignation.
Clinton started her two-day tour of the Balkans in Bosnia on Tuesday where she urged politicians to work towards a more united state, a week after elections that failed to heal the country’s ethnic tensions.
From Bosnia, Clinton travelled to Belgrade, where she praised Serbia’s leadership for agreeing to talks with Kosovo to resolve all issues remaining since the former Serbian province unilaterally declared independence in 2008.
Washington has long been a champion of Kosovo independence and is among 70 states to have recognised Kosovo.
Despite Serbia’s refusal to accept Kosovo’s independence, Belgrade and Pristina agreed to move ahead with EU-brokered talks about the practical issues in the region.
In Brussels, Clinton was to meet on Thursday with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and the EU President Herman Van Rompuy.
