For those who hoped, in vain, to see a Clinton-Obama reunion this summer at Chelsea Clinton’s nuptials, all is not lost: On Thursday, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) announced that First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver the closing remarks at the organization’s meeting this year on Sept. 23.
Among the other leading (lady) lights scheduled to speak at the conference are Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Laura Bush, Melinda Gates, and White House Senior Adviser (and Obama family vacation buddy) Valerie Jarrett. The event will mark the second meeting of the two first ladies in a two-week period: Laura Bush and Michelle Obama are slated to take part in a 9/11 commemoration ceremony for victims of United Flight 93 at the crash site in Shanksville, Pa.
The themes for this year’s conference include: “Empowering Girls and Women,” “Strengthening Market-Based Solutions,” “Harnessing Human Potential” and “Enhancing Access to Modern Technology,” as well as special sessions on “Recovery in Haiti” and “Cancer: Addressing Inequalities in Access and Care.”
