The Obsolescence of Barack Obama

The magic of 2008 can't be recreated, and good riddance to it.

Not long ago Barack Obama, for those who were spellbound by him, had the stylishness of JFK and the historic mission of FDR riding to the nation's rescue. Now it is to Lyndon B. Johnson's unhappy presidency that Democratic strategist Robert Shrum compares the stewardship of Mr. Obama. Johnson, wrote Mr. Shrum in the Week magazine last month, never "sustained an emotional link with the American people" and chose to escalate a war that "forced his abdication as president."

A broken link with the public, and a war in Afghanistan he neither embraces and sells to his party nor abandons—this is a time of puzzlement for President Obama. His fall from political grace has been as swift as his rise a handful of years ago. He had been hot political property in 2006 and, of course, in 2008. But now he will campaign for his party's 2010 candidates from afar, holding fund raisers but not hitting the campaign trail in most of the contested races. Those mass rallies of Obama frenzy are surely of the past.

The vaunted Obama economic stimulus, at $862 billion, has failed. The "progressives" want to double down, and were they to have their way, would have pushed for a bigger stimulus still. But the American people are in open rebellion against an economic strategy of public debt, higher taxes and unending deficits. We're not all Keynesians, it turns out. The panic that propelled Mr. Obama to the presidency has waned. There is deep concern, to be sure. But the Obama strategy has lost the consent of the governed.  (Emphasis added)

Mr. Obama could protest that his swift and sudden fall from grace is no fault of his. He had been a blank slate, and the devotees had projected onto him their hopes and dreams. His victory had not been the triumph of policies he had enunciated in great detail. He had never run anything in his entire life. He had a scant public record, but oddly this worked to his advantage. If he was going to begin the world anew, it was better that he knew little about the machinery of government.

He pronounced on the American condition with stark, unalloyed confidence. He had little if any regard for precedents. He could be forgiven the thought that America's faith in economic freedom had given way and that he had the popular writ to move the nation toward a super-regulated command economy. An "economic emergency" was upon us, and this would be the New New Deal.

There was no hesitation in the monumental changes Mr. Obama had in mind. The logic was Jacobin, the authority deriving from a perceived mandate to recast time-honored practices. It was veritably rule by emergency decrees. If public opinion displayed no enthusiasm for the overhaul of the nation's health-care system, the administration would push on. The public would adjust in due time.

=============================

Fouad Ajami summarizes the Presidency quite well here. Even during campaign it was trust me, I know better approach from Candidate Obama but it does not fly all that well in general with Americans.  But the situation that the country faced in 2008 was massive confusion with respect to the state of the wars and a known downshift in the economy that seemed to have gotten suddenly much worse.  A panacea in one person package may have seemed like a real god-send.  Yes, panic seems to have played a hand in people trusting the person who seemed very confident and self-assured.

I agree with Ajami that the panic that get favor for Pres.Obama has abated.  Not that the economy has improved a whole lot, but the bottom did not fall - our houses are still standing, we still eat.. Most of us do.. even if the urge to splurge may be getting a brake more frequently. So, people do not feel the need to turn to an illogical assurance that seemed to be the all-in-one answer anymore.

With that as the backdrop... and with increasing realization of what the POTUS is doing in the name of "change" the president has lost the consent of the people which is quite apparent in the drop in his ratings.  That said, I saw on CNN that the ratings for Pres.Bush and Pres.Clinton were actually lower than for Pres.Obama during the same time (and that surprised me - I suppose we were just not that keenly observant of political affairs then).

From the video it sounds like between now and the elections in Fall will be a cramming season of more regulations. It is going to be interesting couple of months...

Come November, it is almost a cynch that the Dems are in for significant losses... like in 1994.  Will POTUS do better with that change?  I dont think he has positioned himself well for that.  I agree with Steve Moore that the POTUS is an ideological leftist. Where Pres.Clinton succeeded in moving to the center and getting buy in from the Repubs, Pres. Obama is likely to have significant difficulty in getting anything accomplished.

Yes, good riddance to the "magic"/panic of 2008 that allowed us Americans to let obfuscators pull wool over our eyes.  Time to look at every candidate on the slate... they need to stand alone on their RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENT AND PUBLIC SERVICE - that ALONE is going to be the sure test going forward.  REAL EXPERIENCE is what matters.  Not false promises... not just words.

Excellent article. Many good points regarding the climate of the country in 2008. There was a certain amount of fear and certainly Bush fatigue. But equally important was the marketing of brand Obama to the public - targeting the young. The task of recruiting college students could not have been difficult. Obama's age and his contrived "cool" persona were attractive to the college crowd. I believe another crucial issue regarding the college age Obamanuts, and one that is rarely mentioned, is the ultra-progressive agenda being pushed at most colleges and universities throughout the country - in the name of "diversity" and "social justice" (translation: socialism). Don't get me wrong - I'm glad that this country is diverse, with people of different races, religions, national origins, and I'm all for government providing assistance to people who are unable to care for themselves and their families. But, the concepts of social justice and diversity being pushed by today's institutions of higher learning are much more radical.

In addition to the youth factor, of course there was the MSM factor. We all know how they pushed Obama as the savior of the world, and how they, along with the Obamacrats, slammed everyone who failed to worship The One, as racist.

And, of course, there's the sexism. By selecting Obama (because we all know he wasn't elected), the Dem Party (and MSM) were able to avoid giving the nomination to the rightfully elected female. The women would have to wait a while longer - as if we hadn't waited long enough and had to fight for every ounce of progress made in terms of women's rights.

I agree with this author - Obamania is winding down, and the flame is almost out. Thankfully, people in this country have awakened to the truth they knew all along - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And, as we knew full well, the image Obama presented and the promises he made were all too good to be true. He promised us utopia - and gave us Chicago.

That said. I would never underestimate him and his friends. We know that he has no compunction about playing fast and lose with ethics and election law, and he has plenty of people who feel even less compelled than Obama to play by the rules. I don't doubt for a second that he has a few tricks up his sleeves, still. Given his ego and arrogance, he'll drop out (giving an excellent reason, no doubt) before he'll risk losing. If he doesn't decline to seek reelection, it'll be because he believes he has an angle - something that will ensure his success. JMHO
