Obama's bungling of Shirley Sherrod issue overshadows administration's legislative accomplishments

WASHINGTON - The day after skidding to his worst approval rating, President Obama and his team came across as rattled and defensive - traits Americans don't like in their leaders.
The administration's stumble-bungling in the Shirley Sherrod melodrama is an epic case of lousy damage control - and that's putting it mildly.
By sacking Sherrod on the strength of a doctored video posted by a blogger on the Obama-bashing right, the White House seemed afraid of offending conservative media critics - and white voters who helped elect an African-American President.
"They're so panicky about looking anti-white that they overreact and do things so they can't be accused of being pro-black," a prominent Democratic official complained to the Daily News. "It was very sloppy execution."

I agree with the author. It was a bungle of the highest order... and it completely overshadows recent accomplishments... not that there was a whole lot there.. but financial reform would have been the news this weekend on the domestic policy agenda front.. but the that talk was totally overshadowed and taken over by Sherrod and race discussions.
It should have been a good week for Democrats. The financial overhaul was signed into law. The extension of unemployment benefits passed. The Democratic Party finally looked like a party that could get things done.
But it didn't turn out that way.
The economic news was smothered by that most American of cacophonies – the race tempest. Add to the noise a scandalized old pol. It felt like the good (or bad) old days. Even the Black Panthers are in the news.
The headline came from the bastion of racy stories – the Agriculture Department. An official was fired for seemingly racist remarks. The White House soon realized these were not racist remarks. Context brought about a presidential mea culpa.
Here we were again. The politically correct police charged a black woman with insensitive words about whites. This was the novel part. The racial roles were reversed. It was ripe irony. Conservatives cried racial grievance. Liberals cried over racial comments taken out of context.
Of course, the tempest is anything but novel. About two years ago, a race spectacle spurred Barack Obama to speak about our tendency to "tackle race only as spectacle." One year ago, the cop and prof scandal brought about the silliest of spectacles – the beer summit.

Candidate Obama's "race lecture" in Philadelphia accompanied by 8 flags was meant to make him "look" presidential... and it was lip deep. He is not as in tune with the race thing as he needs to be... or he would have been more sensitive to the issue before tossing his (white) grandma under the bus. The important thing he needed to convey and still needs to is that it should not take tossing anyone to repair wounds. [That goes for Breitbart too.]
Yes, the week's accomplishments got totally overshadowed by the Sherrod /race thing created by Breitbart. Yep, it was triggered by the Tea Party movement and the WH overreacted to it.
