Fmer Pres. Bill Clinton: Tea Party OK, but anti-Obama rage may inspire another Oklahoma bombing (NY Daily News 4/16/10)

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2010/04/16/2010-04-16_former_president_clinton_warns_tea_party_could_feed_same_extremism_that_led_to_o.html

Former President Bill Clinton warned Friday that the anti-government fringe could provoke the kind of political extremism that preceded the Oklahoma City bombing.

"Before the bombing occurred, there was a sort of fever" in the political dialogue that was in ways similar in content to the anger currently boiling up on talk radio and on the Internet, Clinton said at a forum on the 15th anniversary of the attack by Timothy McVeigh that killed 168.

Clinton said people have the right "to advocate whatever the livin' Sam Hill they want to advocate" but they must observe "the basic line dividing criticism from violence or its advocacy."

The enthusiasm for the current Tea Party movement was essentially within bounds, Clinton said.

"This Tea Party movement can be a healthy thing if they are making us justify every dollar of taxes we raise and every dollar of money we've spent," Clinton said.

"But when you get mad, sometimes you end up producing the exact opposite result of what you say you are for."

I share these same concerns (see my post about the Straight Pride T-shirts) and I agree with what the Big Dawg is saying here.

I've read several comments and blogs at various sites, regarding Bill's statements. Most were not happy with Bill. While I think he could have toned down the statement about OK bombing a bit, he was referring to the CLIMATE of the country and the anger that existed. He was in a really good position to know what was happening at the time, since he was POTUS then. I don't find his statement that outrageous.

He said the enthusiasm for the Tea Party is "within bounds". He specifies the kind of accountability that groups such as this should demand, inviting a close scrutiny of government's fiscal practices - a good thing, it seems to me.

I particularly agree with this statement:
"But when you get mad, sometimes you end up producing the exact opposite result of what you say you are for."

What I am afraid of is that in their eagerness to join something that is taking on the current administration, some people may overlook the flaws in the philosophy and actions of the movement they're joining. JMO

Obviously, the current administration needs to be taken on and called out for some of the policies it has thrust on America. But, a swing too far to the other direction may result in an outcome that is unsatisfactory, as well.

I agree Freespirit-- we already had eight years of far-right policies and they created a HUGE mess. Also, I was a kid/teenager when Reagan was president, and I remember exactly what corporate mergers and trickle-down economics did to my hometown and its people. I absolutely do not relate to these right-wingers who are longing for a new Reagan. The old one didn't impress me all that much.

It's great that the Tea Party is out there protesting against Obama. I'm sure all of us remember what it was like when we Hillary supporters were the only ones who opposed him. But the Tea Party is not going to help put Hillary in the White House in 2012, 2016, or any other time. Indeed, if she runs in 2012 they will invest their energy and resources into helping her Republican opponent.

Jen I agree with a lot of what you say but Bush wasn't far right he was actually a liberal fically most of the far right are fically conservative.  Bush was like Obama trying to please everyone and he ended up pleasing no one.
Bill remembers well what led to the OK bombing and that was the anger at Bill Clinton.

interview fri on Wolf Blitzer in OK Wolf read a paragraph out of My Life in which Bill had pasted his OK speech. After Wolf read that back to Bill WOLF asked "Couldn't these words be true today what you said in 1995, could the current president say the same thing? BILL well yes the environment today is similar and after OK and i said those words in 1995 it put things in perspective and kind of turned things around and made people realize what was trivial and what is important, you know all those lives lost. our differences are not as important as our common humanity, after i made that speech the mood in the country started to change for the better WOLF well shouldn't President Obama say something very similar today , i mean don't you think it would help? BILL well Y (he almost said yes) well that is why i said this today because it needed to be said.

THE ABOVE IS PARAPHRASING

by the way, i did not come away thinking he said tea baggers are evil but that talking and voicing our differences is healthy and he said he actually encourages that but the inflammatory words and violence are really bad for our country

You might remember when Oklahoma happened they said it was only the beginning. I remember when all the farmers lost their farms. It was because 90% of the land was being
dictated to by the 10% of urban people who knew nothing of their way of life. Updating that
to jobs being outsourced, and just last week Obama outsourcing NASA to China and Russia,
people here are going to have to hitchhike to the moon.

When people lose their jobs, lose their homes, lose their nest egg, then we will have more
violence, because they have nothing else to lose. Look around you, in your workplace in your
schools, in your own family, and ask why is everbody on anti-depressants? This disease is spreading in the mind, and people are over stressed. Throw in a huge economic mess, and
a few wars, and everybody distrusting the government, and the media labeling people as
extremist , well you'll get some angry people.

I'm angry, looks like to me that Saturday night is gang night to rape girls, while people
stand by and do nothing, and our officials have nothing to say about this violence.

I went to a tea party, I didn't join up, but the group broke into various action groups, one
was about local issues, and showing up at the next council meeting was on the agenda,
why, because the County is trying to take money from the Wind Mill project that is suppose
to go to the towns living nearby, not to those who live 150 miles away. And I couldn't agree more with them, and rural Americans need their support.

How well I remember being a member of the Moveon organization, and how well I remember they endorsed
Obama and not Hillary.  Nobody put moveon under the microscope, like they are doing to the tea party.

It was on this day, 19 Apr 1775, that the farmers fired shots that was heard around the world.

Oh, Building, I remember that, as well.  After years of membership in that pos organization, donating to their causes when I could afford to give them a little, writing senators and representatives when they asked - and then the jack-asses claim that in their "election" between Hillary and Obama to see who they would support for the Dem nom, Obama won?!  I was so mad I thought my hair was going to erupt into flames.  I wrote them a scorching letter, resigning.  I have as much animosity for MoveOn as I do for the DNC and ACORN.

People are angry and frankly they are pissed with Democrats for passing a Health Care bill that is in my opinion unconstitional.  I am so angry I am voting against anything with a D in front of it.  I will vote Green Party if I have to and Republican when I can.  I know how they feel.  I am angry as hell that my government, my President, and my congress did not listen to me.  I am against any candidate who voted for this nasty bill and frankly they deserve to be sent home in shame.   I want them wiped off the planet.  I want them all to know they are hired by us and they are supposed to do what we want not the other way around.
