The favorable rating for the Democratic Party has fallen to its lowest level since Gallup began asking the question in 1992 —its standing has dropped 14 percentage points since President Obama's election — but the Republican Party fares no better. Three of four Americans say they are dissatisfied with the country's direction.
The good feeling that welcomed Obama with the departure of President George W. Bush seems to have dissipated amid continued concerns about the economy and a growing willingness to hold the new president responsible for the nation's travails.
"If the election were now, we'd have a 'change' election; we'd have a 1994," says Stan Greenberg, pollster for President Bill Clinton when Democrats lost control of the House and Senate that year. Greenberg questions whether Republicans will be in a position to capitalize on voter discontent.
Among the findings:
• A record-low 28% say most members of Congress deserve re-election. The percentage who say their representative deserves re-election drops to 49%, only the second time it has dipped below 50%.
• For the first time, both major parties are viewed unfavorably by most Americans. The anti-tax "Tea Party" movement has a favorable rating nearly as high as they do — 37% compared with 41% for Democrats and 42% for the GOP.
• Fifty percent say Obama doesn't deserve re-election, and 26% say he deserves "a great deal" of the blame for the nation's economic problems, double the percentage in July. Bush still does worse: 42% give him a great deal of the blame.
I am not surprised people are fed up with both parties. Conservatives are still pissed at the Republicans and PUMAs are pissed with the Democrats. This is a large problem and has been growing worse. You have lifelong Democrats who are angry at not only this administration but also this congress. You had the reverse in 2006. Its time both parties either wake the hell up or get the hell out of the way. George W. Bush Idiot Barack H. Obama Idiot Two men two different parties but both idiots.
