TOPIC: HCR: "Obama Delays Asia Trip" (NYT 3/18/10) Rep.Kucinich on change of vote, cost of HCR (FOX Business News, 3/19/10)
President Obama has called off his trip to Australia and Indonesia, deeming it necessary to stay in Washington to push for passage of the health care legislation up for a vote later this weekend in the House. (Emphasis added here)
In making the announcement, Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said that Mr. Obama on Thursday was telephoning the leaders of the two countries to say he will be staying in Washington to nurse passage of what could be the signature issue of his presidency.
“The president greatly regrets the delay,” Mr. Gibbs said. “Passage of heath insurance reform is of paramount importance and the president is determined to see this battle through.”
Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, said of the president’s decision at her briefing: “This is historical. I am sure he wants to be here for the history.”
Final Senate action on health care legislation could come as early as next week.
Begged out in order to "focus on healthcare"? He's been pushing this thing for over a year now, guess he didn't have the votes to pass this bill after all. I guess Obama is going have to try to help Nancy Pelosi and break a few kneecaps of the fence-sitters himself. Really, this is America's loss and Asia's gain.
Yes, Ebinger, he has done a poor job of positioning the bill correctly right off the gate.. and so a year has gone by and the bill is FAR WORSE than what it could have been. It has left the Dems in a quandry in the situation... let the chance to reform go and it may be years/decades before there is another chance to reform. Pass this now, may be can do amendments and additional reform in the next 3 years and further improve on it. This is what the Dems are left with.
Frankly, Rep.Dennis Kucinich did a much better job of explaining it in this.

Kucinich on Vote Change for Health Care (FOX Business News, Video, 3/19/10)
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, (D-Ohio), on why he decided to change his stance on health-care reform.
Rep.Kucinich is FAR more articulate than Pres.Obama and addresses the questions directly, makes far more sensible arguments than I hear Pres.Obama making. Also in the second video, right off the gate, he is listening... when he realizes that it is new information. I was impressed with that.

(Trying to get the best, briefest of stakeholder perspectives here).
The biggest advertisers right now:
CitizensUnited.org
USAleague.com
Chamber of Commerce
All three have heavily funded advertisements that are targeted to our location and gives the name and phone number of our representatives.
Advertisers are personalizing the ad, including using family.. and in that one referenced ad, a rep's under-age children were used in the ad. That is a huge no-no!
=======================
It was very difficult to reach but the reps were reachable today. They will probably also be reachable tomorrow.
I would suggest calmly seeing all of the above and decide before calling.
Here is the thing that was most impactful on me.. that is from Rep.Dennis Kucinich. There are many obstacles to HCR. As to the present bill on the table, they have no chance to change the bill at this time; only vote on it. If it does not pass, it is back to start line. If it passes, they get a couple of years to improve it with amendments.
