As political landscape shifts, Grassley keeps pace (By THOMAS BEAUMONT • tbeaumont@dmreg.com • March 14, 2010 )

Arlington, Va. - Chuck Grassley heads out on his run most days at 5:15 a.m., alone, barely recognizable under the brim of a Caterpillar equipment cap.

On this winter morning, few see the senior senator from Iowa shuffling stiffly but steadily in the darkness as we navigate the three-mile loop around his neighborhood.

He applies the same disciplined if at times graceless approach to his 11th year as a runner - he took up jogging at age 65 - as to his 30th year in the Senate.

Grassley, a Republican, deserves his renown as a government watchdog and a trusted ally in forging bipartisan compromise, according to Des Moines Register interviews with Senate experts and four of the body's most senior members.

His Iowa Poll ratings are the stuff of political folk heroes. He remains more popular than the governor, president or his fellow Iowan in the Senate, Democrat Tom Harkin.

But after more than 50 years as an elected official, Grassley confronts a political landscape that's shifting under his feet. More polarized attitudes among senators and voters threaten to erode his sizable influence in Congress and legendary appeal at home. He faces a restive electorate and a defining question: Does his career-long regimen of diligent policy work and pragmatic bipartisanship still work in Washington and Iowa?

We need more whistle blowers like Grassley......I attended this town-hall meeting in Adel, IA that they are speaking of in this article. It had a crowd of over 500 people and the crowd got pretty nasty.....especially concerning the HCR. Grassley handled himself with such grace and answered all questions with a calm manner. I had too hand it him as he could have easily gotten defensive.

Bloomer, That is great to hear. In fact, I saw some clips of Sen.Grassley's HCR townhall meets from last year where tea-partiers got loud in his meetings and even then he had answered quite well.  Personally, I think Sen.Grassley has done quite well in being a people's representative and reaching out to constituencies, and what you are saying reinforces that impression.

Good article there.  Yes, the tea-partiers have made him a poster-child target for attacks.. he was one of the first to have those townhalls, and therefore got the most notoriety.. while all he was doing was listening and answering..

I hope he remains truly bipartisan and a true watchdog. I also hope he is socially moderate.

Wow, that is indeed impressive.

Then again, Twitter is an outward bound communication channel more so than inward. It may help him quickly address issues that may arise out there.. but does he LISTEN to the tweets from his constituencies? I hope so, but I highly doubt it. People just do not have time for all the tweets. The Reps rely heavily on their staff to read and sift thru things and deliver the highlights only.

If you call your rep's office, they take copious notes, but at the end of your conversation, ask them this. WHAT part of what I just told you will you be giving to the Rep?  Let them read back to you. It is a small portion. Ask to add into that specifics that you want included. This is the way to have a greater chance that you get your message delivered and read.
