Guns in National Parks: Maine seeks to stymie federal law

Amanda Terrebonne bullet1.gif February 24, 2010

Maine lawmakers are debating whether to override a new federal law that allows guns in national parks.

The federal law took effect Monday but allows states to opt out. Maine is believed to be the only state so far considering superseding the new policy and is home to the popular Acadia National Park.

A Senate panel is nearly evenly split on the proposal, setting the stage for a big floor debate.

Democratic Sen. Stanley Gerzofsky favors the ban and says families should have places to go where they know there are no guns.

I do not like the idea of guns in the national parks.  We go to the national parks to relax.

Is the idea of the new law that if it is national park we can expect hooligans, and better carry a gun?  Should we all buy guns now to go to the national parks?  I just do not like it.

We are annual national park subscribers and will probably discontinue that.
