Magnitude 6.2 - BOUGAINVILLE REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA 2010 February 01 22:28:17 UTC 6.0 earthquake at 12:28pm PST / 3:28pm EST Off the coast of California
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake erupted beneath the seafloor at 12:20 p.m., 47 miles west-southwest of Eureka, shaking a large area of northern California and parts of the central coast, the U.S. Geological Survey says. There also have been isolated reports that the quake was felt in Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Ladera Ranch and Costa Mesa.
A tsunami is not expected, says the West Coast-Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.
The quake comes less than one month after a 6.5 quake occurred near today’s temblor, and adds to the North Coast’s reputation as one of the most seismically active regions in the western hemisphere. The Jan. 9 quake caused $40 million in damage, says sfgate.com. The latest quake began 7 miles deep, and it appears to have been caused by the Mendocino fault. Shaking was felt throughout the Bay area, and south to Ventura.
