Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid chided President Barack Obama Tuesday for making Las Vegas a “poster child” for excessive spending.
“I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the president is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the president needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money,” Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, said in a statement.
Speaking about government spending at a New Hampshire town hall earlier today, Obama said “when times are tough, you tighten your belts.”
He added: “You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college.”
Last year, Obama drew criticism from Nevada politicians for criticizing junkets to Las Vegas by bailed-out banks – and Reid’s political opponents accused him for not taking a tough enough line against the president.
But on Tuesday, Reid responded with a swift criticism of the president’s comments.
"Nevada is the nation's top destination for tourism and conventions,” Reid said in a statement. “It is more popular than any other place in the country, and for good reason: It's affordable, easy to get to from anywhere, and the weather is perfect.”
He added: "To truly reenergize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas."
ok very rarely do i find things that surprise me politically these days, but I have to say....my initial reaction to this was "Wait a minute...is this some kind of joke?" Imagine my surprise then when it turned out to be a true story!
For, I don't know, the idea of Reid getting in a tiff about Vegas, or Obama saying something like that, and then Obama apologizing for this....... seem like something out of the Twilight Zone.
I mean, come on....where is intelligent politics these days?!?? I know that I shouldn't be too surprised anymore since it seems like everything in politics is a circus now these days, but this is just something else.
And although of course I am enjoying the hints of cannibalizing one another that this article suggests....oh how I wish for a return to some semblance of intelligent politics from these clowns.
Arguing about Vegas. These "leaders" really are idiots.
More preaching from the self rightous thief. Just what I need. Perhaps we should tighten our belts by taking away his plane and his house and his food and his security? Lets demand that
As you all know, I RARELY defend the thief-in-chief - this is probably only the second time - but Barry's right about this, and Reid needs to shut the hell up. Fiscal irresponsibility got us where we are today, and some people actually listen to Obama, unfortunately. So when he says something that makes sense, I've got to reconize!

Actually, Em, Vegas has taken one heck of a hit since Obama originally "pooh-poohed" businesses having their conventions in Vegas. He equated Vegas with largess with not a thought to what that would do to their local economy.
But then again, it is always rhetoric before think and act with Obama.
