I don't normally like to visit TPM anymore, let alone post something from there, but was wondering what people thought of this...
Palin: Let's Merge The Tea Party And GOP
Former vice presidential candidate and current Fox News contributor Sarah Palin said last night that the Republican Party should merge with tea partiers.
Fox's Greta Van Susteren asked if tea party candidates would end up siphoning votes from GOP nominees, or if the movement will "merge with the Republican Party."
"They need to merge," Palin said. "Definitely, they need to merge. I think those who are wanting the divisions and the divisiveness and the controversy -- those are the ones who don't believe in the message. And they're the ones, I think, stirring it up."
As we've reported at TPMmuckraker, the tea party movement has been increasingly divided. Much of the friction has been over the national tea party convention to be held in Nashville. Critics say the convention, with its expensive tickets and for-profit organizer, doesn't jive with true tea party values. Yesterday, we reported that Reps. Michele Bachmann and Martha Blackburn have dropped out.
Palin, whose speaking fees are rumored to be around $100,000, told Van Susteren she is still on for the convention. "You betcha," she said.
On the divisiveness, she continued, "We need to ignore that and we need to forge ahead with a cohesive message. It's a common sense message. It, again, is, Government, limit yourself so that the private sector, our families, free individuals can grow and thrive and prosper and enjoy America's freedom!"
I'm not sure what to make of this -- I like Sarah Palin as a person (although I do think her resignation was a misstep) but something about this comment by her didn't sit quite right with me. Maybe I am missing something, but I don't know....I am for the tea parties and what they are for, but I don't think I am quite ready to become a Republican either.
The Tea Party Movement - the movement - was of all sides. Dems, Independents, Republicans - all who said "Taxed Enough Already" - that was the genesis of the movement. People took tea bags and went to these meetings all over the US Map and protested against the government.
That does NOT mean that they said they are going to join ANY party.
To take advantage of the current situation and say, let's combine it with GOP is just plain inappropriate, and yet another political misstep on her part.
She appears to be under contract to speak up at the convention in Tennessee; she has reaffirmed that she will show up -- emphasizing the people side of the movement, and making NO COMMENTS AT ALL about the Tea Party Nation - the for-profit company and the muck about its formation that has been dredged up recently.. and that seems to have soon led to Michele Bachmann and Marsha Blackburn backing out of their commitment to appear at their Tennessee conference. I would have preferred that Sarah Palin address the matter head-on rather than slide it under the rug.
But it is clear that Sarah Palin recognizes that the Tea Party Movement -- the MOVEMENT - does not have good foundation to stand on. This is one of the things that happens when an "independent" movement is owned by ONE person and there is secrecy around that not made known to core members. The stink causes distrust and tensions that seep out and is palpable in the environment; people back out quickly. Tea Party Movement may suffer this rapidly. Give the mess underneath that has been dredged up lately, the TP Movement is most certainly in jeopardy...
Unfortunately, the suggestion of combining TPMovement with GOP may hasten that demise, whether or not it is successful proposal.
All this makes me wonder about the potential for an independent Center-based party. To be honest, I was hopeful that TPMovement would turn into that, but it has increasingly turned deeply conservative. If the current TPMovement combines into GOP, it will openly acknowledge this directional shift and we may be back to the 2-party mode.

I definitely think the Tea Party movement, of which I was a part, has been co-opted. There's always someone who's willing to screw things up just for money... I think Sarah means well, but she's obviously not aware that dyed-in-the-wool Dems were and still are a part of the movement.
Thanks for posting, Em!

I was excited about the Tea Party movement when it started, but as Alex said, it has been co-opted. And there's too much Clinton Derangement Syndrome among the right-wingers who now dominate that movement.
As I understand it, there are two entities representing the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party people, like me, and then there is the Tea Party Express.
I got an email from my local coordinator stating that they can't attend the convention because the amount is outrageous and the party is based on the average American people. Most of our people couldn't afford to attend.
