Howard Zinn (from Massachusetts) died today in Santa Monica, California at the age of 87.

Howard Zinn was a professor (Boston University), an author (over 14 books), a film maker, a playwright, a husband, a father and my husband's boss for the past two years.

For the past two years my husband has been working on "The People Speak".  Some of it was shown on the History channel in December.  My husband was thrilled to get a chance to work with Howard Zinn.  Not only did my husband admire Howard, but they became friends. Exchanging novels and emails.

My husband spent countless hours with Howard Zinn and many 'stars' from "The People Speak", but mostly with Howard.  He worked with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Josh Brolin, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and more.  It was during the 2008 primaries and election and all the conversations were about their love for obama.  Some of these 'stars' did not speak kindly of Hillary (or Sarah).  My husband was suffering, alone.  One night my husband said to me, "Howard (Zinn) is very private on his political views, which I find strange because all his writings are against the government and yet he does not talk about his political views, I wonder if he's not a fan of obama".  My husband wanted to ask him about obama, but I told him not to because I was afraid he'd get fired.  It appeared to me that Howard would have been a supporter of obama, because of his working relationships and friendships with Matt and Ben, etc. and his anti-Bush views.

Today, after we got the call that Howard died of a heart attack, we saw this on-line and sure enough, Howard Zinn did not support obama.
He actually said that obama was dangerous.  My husband said after reading this information, "I knew it, he was just too brilliant of a man to not see through this idiot".

One of Zinn's last public writings was a brief essay, published last week in The Nation, about the first year of the Obama administration.

"I've been searching hard for a highlight," he wrote, adding that he wasn't disappointed because he never expected a lot from Obama.

"I think people are dazzled by Obama's rhetoric, and that people ought to begin to understand that Obama is going to be a mediocre president — which means, in our time, a dangerous president — unless there is some national movement to push him in a better direction."

'People's History' author Howard Zinn dies at 87

Howard Zinn, an author, teacher and political activist whose leftist "A People's History of the United States" became a million-selling alternative to mainstream texts and a favorite of such celebrities asBruce Springsteen and Ben Affleck, died Wednesday. He was 87.

Zinn died of a heart attack in Santa Monica, Calif., daughter Myla Kabat-Zinn said. The historian was a resident of Auburndale, Mass.

Published in 1980 with little promotion and a first printing of 5,000, "APeople's History" was — fittingly — a people's best-seller, attracting a wide audience through word of mouth and reaching 1 million sales in 2003. Although Zinn was writing for a general readership, his book was taught in high schools and colleges throughout the country, and numerous companion editions were published, including "Voices of a People's History," a volume for young people and a graphic novel

Sharp man. He could see through the fog that this candidate and POTUS has spread around himself.

Wow, Destiny, just wow!  I wonder what Zinn would have said if your husband had asked him.  I think you gave the right advice - the question would have put Howard in a bad position vis-a-vis all those actors he was working with.

Can you imagine how many millions feel the same way, and just are too afraid to say anything?

I was thinking the same thing as I went to rest up last night.  Wonder if he has left any of his thoughts in writing.

We are all so restricted from expressing our thoughts loud lately.  It is just crazy to have to live with the shackles of political correctness.  In the US talking politics in the workplace is total taboo.. not so in some other countries that I know..

Alex,  That is exactly what crossed my mind.

My husband said that there were a couple times Howard said something that made him think he wasn't a fan of obama, but didn't feel that it was enough to open a conversation about him.  Last September, Howard spoke in front of an audience in Toronto, Canada why it's important to protest.  He said change came from the bottom up, from the people. And, that it didn't matter who was president, because they are not the ones who make the change.  To my husband, that sounded like Howard was against obama, but he was sitting on the stage between Josh Brolin and Matt Damon.
In April, Howard said to my husband , "are all your friends becoming disappointed with obama?". My husband being careful said, "yes, very much so".
The problem with my husband saying anything to his work friends against obama is that he can't hide how he feels.

Some of my republican friends can't talk against obama, because they still believe that the president is like god and it's a sin to talk against either.

So, you're correct, there are millions of people who are silent.

A Radical Treasure

Published: January 29, 2010

I had lunch with Howard Zinn just a few weeks ago, and I’ve seldom had more fun while talking about so many matters that were unreservedly unpleasant: the sorry state of government and politics in the U.S., the tragic futility of our escalation in Afghanistan, the plight of working people in an economy rigged to benefit the rich and powerful.

Readers' Comments

Readers shared their thoughts on this article.

Mr. Zinn could talk about all of that and more without losing his sense of humor. He was a historian with a big, engaging smile that seemed ever-present. His death this week at the age of 87 was a loss that should have drawn much more attention from a press corps that spends an inordinate amount of its time obsessing idiotically over the likes of Tiger Woods and John Edwards.

Mr. Zinn was chagrined by the present state of affairs, but undaunted. “If there is going to be change, real change,” he said, “it will have to work its way from the bottom up, from the people themselves. That’s how change happens.”

Destiny, I'm so impressed by your writing. I'm always so saddened by the death of American heroes. Why can't they live forever?

He is right, change comes from the bottom up; "We the People." Let's hope we can make that change this November and in 2012.

Destiny, thank you for sharing.

I had not heard much about Howard Zinn, but I knew of his work, I am now reading up on him.

Sounds like a good astute man.

Most people saw through the marxist fraud immediately, and many millions more will.
Nothing but a con-man, the dangerous part is he seems to despise America and its founding principles, but thankfully, more and more millions of people are seeing through him and are rediscovering why America (and the US Constitution) is such a unique place (and document), and NO party or person owns it, they are only temporary stewarts to guide it back to how the founding fathers envisioned it.
