Members of the U.S. Senate may end up wishing they had copied the President's holiday plans and gone to Hawaii. The people are angry and are using the Internet to vent at their Congressional Representatives.
Congress.org is a website that urges political advocacy through the use of its "soapbox" forum and an e-mail platform where users can easily write their Representatives as well as the President and First Lady. The developers tout what they call their "award winning software program" allowing users to communicate with those in Congress. Since the site first showed up in 2004, over 8 million letters have been sent to Congress through its platform. By late afternoon Tuesday, just under one thousand letters were sent through cyberspace to various elected officials, most of them dealing with healthcare reform.
The reading can be at times, informative and entertaining and at other times downright troubling. The following illustrate just a few highlights of the varied correspondence:
To Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) - "Your YES vote on the healthcare bill guarantees you will not get my vote come election time!"
To Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) - "I'm against paying for lazy and illegal aliens to have health care."
To Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) - "You're ruining the U.S. Thanks for your time."
The Democrats weren't the only ones feeling the heat, however.
To Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) - "You sold your soul to the druggies. When you're not partying, do you think you could spend a minute asking what we Carolinians think?"
To Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) - After urging Snowe to support healthcare reform the author closed with, "Whining about work this time of the year is not becoming."
Of course there were plenty of letters directed to the President, several in fact calling the Commander in Chief a "fraud, fascist and a disgrace." One American asked, "Where's your birth certificate?" Even the First Lady, Michelle Obama couldn't escape criticism, as one person told her, "Quit spending my money!"
WOW! Strong emotion in this country toward all our so-called "leaders". I think most people feel much anger and disappointment in government and the health -care and other policies. But, mostly, I think people are very afraid - about unemployment, about the economy, about personal safety. I just think fear is pervasive. Fear breeds anger and hatred, so the comments to the congress members and to Obama are not surprising. I tend to agree that 2010 will not be a good year for Dems. If they lose the majority in both houses - they certainly deserve it.

Strong statements, however I don't think these reps really care. They knew the onslaught they'd get, but they continued to vote for health care. What does that say about our government legislatures?
And, what is really surprising, is that many of these dems are saying all will be forgiven once the people see how wonderful the bill is. How do they know? Is it that "we know better" syndrom thinking surfacing?
2010 will be the watershed year when the citizens speak up and tell the politicos exactly who is truly in charge. I sure hope a lot more people step into the political process.
Talking of politics... That word is so charged. We need a better word to talk about the process of citizen representation. Citizenry!

They've got to go in 2010.
They don't care what the public thinks.
I am paranoid enough to not go near these email sites to our "representatives". Do that and they have your isp, name, home address. They find out who opposes "the one".
As a Floridian I doubt my vote will count (it hasn't counted in the last two presidential elections) but I will vote anyway, all republican, and not one incumbant. (sp)
These people are doing nothing to save this country. My vote probably won't count but I will do so anyway and will not vote for a single incumbant.

2010 the Democrats are going to get it. People don't forget when you disobey their wishes. The House is going to go Red and if the Senate doesn't go Red it will be a vitural tie.
