Dem Opportunity

I mentioned earlier that Republicans and Democrats seem determined to run the 2010 election as a referendum on Health Care Reform. Dems say they'll run on claims that the GOP will repeal reform if they regain control; and Republicans will run on a promise that they'll do just that. As I've said, the Dems have put themselves in a tough -- probably needlessly tough position -- by delaying implementation several years into the future. But I think this may be more difficult than Republicans think -- if the Dems play their cards right ... yes, famous last words.

Larry Sabato notes that there are dangers on both sides for an election on in this way since there are very popular parts of the bill -- end to denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions, recission, etc -- and unpopular parts, mainly new taxes and mandates. The policy reality is that you can't have one without the other. Without expanding the risk pools -- which you can only really do by forcing everybody to get insurance -- you can't force carriers to insure sick people for affordable rates. This isn't really a complexity you can hope for from a political campaign.

But Republicans are getting a lot pressure from the right to demand total repeal. And given the nature of their opposition it will be hard to get much traction pushing for anything less than total repeal.

[snip]

The key is the totalness of the Republicans position. Total repeal. This is more of an opportunity for Dems than many realize.

======================

There is great truth in this article.  As bad as it is for the Dems, Republicans did themselves great disservice by not putting the electorate's interest ahead and sitting down at the table to negotiate in earnest.  They went for the knock down punch on the bill, and it just might come to haunt them.

When information is finally available, and the contents is exposed in this health care bill, repeal will be welcomed by millions of Americans.

Republicans/Conservatives/Independents---none of them should back down. Hit the ground running and keep punching through the lies and corruption in this bill. They need to keep those lies right up front for Americans to view and be more informed.

Pubs have been too quiet.

They will need to be very specific in their attacks.. and not make party-platform attacks that come across cant used phrases. People have become numb to the party platform approach. They will look for meaningful specific criticism that actually resonates with their issues and concerns of the day.

People are sick of everything being so politicized. Obviously, there are currently some huge deficits in the health care system, before the so-called reform - the pre-existing condition exclusion being one of them. Price gouging by the drug companies is another. Under the proposed health care reform measures, major deficits will still exist - the costs involved being a major one. All of the important, very personal issues are relegated to nothing more than political talking points. Physical health and medical care, as well as economic stability are very personal issues to most Americans. Our lives and the lives of our children and family members are being impacted in a very significant way by our elected officials - while they spend their days immersed in thoughts - not of the well-being of the citizens of this country, but of whether their actions will help them get re-elected. I hope all of them are tossed out of office, and that future would-be elected officials get the message - we will vote for people who demonstrate real interest in this country and its citizens, not for those who are seeking only to gain power, wealth, and re-election.
