I don't think Liberals had a chance of defeating conservatives. Liberals and Conservatives as well as those in the middle will always remain. Americans are a fickle people which is good they swing between Conservativism and liberism because most people are in the middle. Liberals are on the way out because Americans don't care rather your right or left they don't want you spending a lot of money.

What was sold as a new New Deal, in the end, was not. The byproduct is unemployment unseen in a quarter century. And Obama clumsily appears on the side of the two bête noires of the day: big business and big government.

Interesting observation with major truth to it. I would just add to that a reminder about redistribution of wealth. I believe Joe the plumber was spot on. Then, the picture gets clearer.
