You might be a racist if ...(San Antonio Express 9/20/09)

You might be a racist if you disagree with President Barack Obama.

Obama says he won't sign a health care bill that adds one dime to the deficit and that no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions. So if you suggest his deficit pledge is nothing more than “a promise in search of fulfillment,” or if you write that the public option “could cover all abortions if the administration chooses, and as Obama once promised,” as the Annenberg Public Policy Center's FactCheck.org does, you could be a closet Klansman.

You might be a racist if you think ACORN, the community organizing group mired for years in controversy, isn't worthy of taxpayer money and that it can't be trusted to help conduct the 2010 census.

So if you vote to strip federal funding from ACORN, as 83 senators and 345 representatives did — including a total of 221 Democrats — and if you write a letter severing ACORN's relationship with the census, as President Obama's own nominee to head the Census Bureau did, you could be a goose-stepping white supremacist.

You might be a racist if you think Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., is unfit to serve as the nation's chief tax writer.

Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, failed to disclose rental income and pay state or federal taxes on a vacation villa in the Dominican Republic and failed to disclose bank accounts with balances up to $1 million. So if you write that “mounting embarrassment for taxpayers and Congress makes it imperative that Representative Charles Rangel step aside,” as the New York Times editorial page did, you could be a member of the Aryan Nations.

You might be a racist if you call Kanye West a jackass.

But that was President Obama himself. Could the nation's first black president, whose election was supposed to usher in an age of post racial reconciliation, really be racist? It's an absurd proposition that shows just how absurdly easy it is for people to play the race card when they lack the ability or inclination to debate an issue on its merits.

The irrational hatred of racists, of course, does exist. The scurrilous accusation of racism, however, detracts from its reality. That's why you might be a fool if you exploit its specter and, in so doing, obscure the real thing.

The race card isn't working this time. All of America is waking up. WE ARE THE MAJORITY.

I have a question for HMG:  Is all this "racist" stuff wearing on you?  I worry that it must be at least somewhat distressing to hear that term, that in reality actually means something, just done in totally by this administration.  I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

We discussed this last night and it is bothering her as much as it is bothering us.  This is like crying "wolf" when there is no wolf remotely near the sheep.  If you cry it enough, when the real wolf is at your door no one will bat an eyelash.

The people that will suffer the most are those without a voice, which are the poor.  Racism effects everyone but some who are trapped in poverty are the ones that have to deal with physical abuse and torment.  Very rarely will you see someone torching a house in a middle or upper class neighborhood due to racism.  But they will take advantage of those who cannot get support from the authorities.

Are there racists out there who don't like Obama because he is black?  Yes, there probably are.  But do not throw that term at anyone who happens to be white when they don't agree with his policy or performance.

Jimmy Carter thinks that we don't like Obama's policies because we are racists...well, President Carter...PROVE IT!!!

Thanks, OM.  I appreciate your answer, but I don't think I worded the question very well.

I do know that HMG is bothered by the improper use of the word.  But as someone who has to deal with real racism on a regular basis, probably, I would think that it could be distressing to hear it, the term, belittled here on a daily basis.  Not in a mean way, but as it's used by the O-ineligible "administration."

It's not our fault that this has become a huge issue, and it has to be addressed.  But I'm afraid that the addressing of the issue here might come off sounding a little insensitive to real racism sometimes, inadvertently (sp?).

Again, not sure I'm explaining myself very well.no

Oh, I get you now.  HMG will have to answer that for herself.  You are only commenting on it as much as the media is, which is every fricken second of every fricken day.  Correction, the media isn't doing it, it is the hypocritical Dems.

Alex
It bothers me a lot because I bare the scars either physically or mentally the scars of racism and to hear the dems and the media throwing that term around on foolishiness is very painful.
This is racism because frankly its racist to assume that just because someone is white that they are racist.  That angers me because racism is horrible no matter who is the victim.  This use of the race card is going to hurt this country more then its going to heal it.  I am also a believer that talks about race has to be a two way street.  We have to talk to each other not at each other.
I wonder how much longer this is going to go on before people wake up.

Thank you, HMG.  You are inspiring to me, seeing how you handle everything.  We are lucky to have you here (insert BIG HUG emoticon smile)!

I understand what you are saying too Alex. I honestly hadn't thought of it before, but we do have to be careful here that we don't throw the concept of racism out of the door simply because we are sick of hearing the word thrown around. What I am also afraid of is that those who feel they are under attack unfairly may point to those accusations and allow the bitterness and resentment to grow until they quite frankly don't care anymore if it exists or not. If we don't keep fighting the good fight against racism and sexism, we loose.
