Hillary Clinton walks with South African President Nelson Mandela during a tour of Robben Island, South Africa, on March 20, 1997.

During the visit to Kenya, the Secretary will deliver a speech at the Ministerial Opening Ceremony for the AGOA Forum, participate in bilateral meetings with Kenya’s senior leaders, discuss global hunger and agricultural issues at a major research institute, and engage with Kenyan citizens. She will also meet with Sheikh Sharif Amed, the President of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government.

The Secretary will continue her travel with stops in South Africa, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Liberia, and Cape Verde. In each nation, she will emphasize Africa as a place of opportunity, built on an ethic of responsibility. She will underline America’s commitment to partner with governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and private citizens to build societies where each individual can realize their potential.

In her bilateral meetings and other events, she will encourage new solutions to old challenges, harnessing the power of innovation and technology to provide a foundation for future stability, human development, and sustainable economic growth. She will stress the importance of facilitating social and economic entrepreneurship, encouraging a new generation of young African scientists, small business leaders, entrepreneurs and civic leaders who are solving real problems and establishing new models for economic success and social advances, with women as full partners in this progress. And she will discuss ways to foster good regional governance, partnering with regional leaders to band together to prevent conflict and violence, including gender-based violence, democratic erosions, and transnational threats.

Following her visit to Cape Verde, the Secretary will return to Washington, DC.

HILLARY TO VISIT CAPE VERDE BEFORE RETURNING TO WASHINGTON

Cape Verde Photo: Town of Mindelo

Photo: Cape Verde
Photograph by JP De Manne/Getty Images
Cape Verde's volcanic islands lie off the coast of West Africa, but their population is of mixed African and European descent. This appealing vista is of Mindelo, capital of Sao Vicente.

Cape Verde Information and History

Off the coast of West Africa, Cape Verde consists of ten volcanic islands and five islets. The islands were uninhabited until discovered by the Portuguese in 1456; African slaves were brought here to work on plantations. Independence from Portugal came in 1975. African culture is most evident on the island of Santiago—where half the population lives. Cape Verde enjoys a stable democratic system. Water shortages hinder agriculture, but tourism is a growing industry.

ECONOMY

Industry: food and beverages, fish processing, shoes and garments, salt mining.
Agriculture: bananas, corn, beans, sweet potatoes; fish.
Exports: fuel, shoes, garments, fish, hides.

Thanks for the pics and information on her trip. I do hope she has some vacation time. She loved being in Africa when she was first lady.

She sure is gaining plenty of "real experience" in foreign politics. That should take care of the critics who said she didn't have enough because she was "only" First Lady. Can't wait until she runs again.

So much for the critics and all that nonsense about sipping tea.

Where she has gone, she has done real work of diplomacy in her capacity as First Lady.  And the experience gained from those travels, her life-long learning, her Senate experience, her experience of running the household in the WhiteHouse and her excellent executive skills... are what we are benefitting from today. She is a fantastic SOS.

And she will be a fantastic POTUS.  Cannot wait to campaign for her again. Well, may be I have started already! w00t.gifw00t.gif

HMG, when she said she had thirty five years experience and the LIED and said she did not, I was just livid! They gave Obama credit for so called "community organizing" though. I pointed out that SHE did her first community organizing on the south side of Chicago too...at FOURTEEN. She was part of organizing to provide free babysitting to poor immigrant families so they could go out to work. And guess what? HER organizing was a success unlike his.

From there she worked with poor and abused women and children. She did pro bono *for FREE* legal work for them and on and on. Yes, it was thirty five years of working to help people whether she was in the government or not. And don't even get me started on how she helped the education system in Little Rock...does anyone even know how hard that was? She faced FIERCE opposition but, she won them all over and got the job done. And not only that she started in the poorest schools so she could help them first.

Thirty five years against less than a few months on Obama's side? Give me a break..no it's NOT working out and anyone with one eye and half sense would have been able to see it would not work. We could have had someone with years of experience and compassion but, ohhh nooo these fool dems did not want to support that.

They wanted to stand outside and hollar "Yes We Can!" all day together whether or not that would help the country because it made THEM feel good.

I think we should all start wearing our Hillary for President gear - it will get people thinking about the idea -  I wonder what effect it could have if we got a million - even half a million - of her 18 million supporters to wear Hillary for President gear right now.

Agree with that!

Unfortunately, Obama was the "chosen one" from a long, long time ago . . .

Yes she also did community organizing similar to what we have been doing with Oblahblah when she was fourteen in Chicago... she found voting discrepencies in Chicago when she was 14. She accomplished that at a young age yet Obama gets credit for doing absolutely nothing as a community organizer.
