Last week was a pretty big week for Judy Chu (D-Calif). On Tuesday she won the election for the 32nd Congressional District seat with 62 percent of the vote, beating out Republican Betty Chu. By Thursday she was in Washington being sworn in as the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress.
After her swearing in, Chu went straight to work, voting on several environmental bills. Later that day she took her seat on the House Education and Labor Committee.
With so many positions left open by women after the encouraging appointments made by the Obama administration, it gives us extra cause to celebrate Chu’s win in the 32nd Congressional District. Chu replaces Hilda Solis who was tapped by President Obama to become Secretary of Labor earlier this year.
In a written statement Chu had this say, "I look forward to working hard for my constituents in Washington, using my fiscal expertise to help our nation emerge from our current financial crisis, improving our health care system and bringing much needed transportation and education dollars to the San Gabriel Valley."
WomenCount has happily followed Judy Chu’s campaign from beginning to end and are happy to commend Rep. Judy Chu for yet another seat saved.
My congrats go out to Judy Chu! Women are breaking barriers all over.
