GERALDINE FERRARO: Hateful Language Has No Place In Campaigns (Fox News - 11/1/10)

I was wondering when sexism against women in this election cycle was going to draw some attention. -- I won’t go back to the ‘84 campaign when I, too, was called a “word that rhymes with witch.” -- Since then I have received several rather embarrassed apologies from a very gracious woman who was, understandably, caught up in her husband's campaign. And that is over.

But in 2008 I became a lunatic and ended up loosing a lot of friends in the media when I was extremely vocal about how Hillary was treated by the press and her opponent.

After that campaign was over, numerous reports were issued by academics across the country as well as some women in the media but the change in behavior that I had hoped would be forth coming in this campaign, never materialized. Instead the silence was deafening.

Gerry makes some great points and calls out both sides.  Mondale/Ferraro was the first major campaign I worked for and I have to tell you, it didn't change much from that campaign to Hillary's when it came to sexism.

And I think it classy of Gerry to call Nancy Reagan classy.  We just have to find a way to tone down the "cat-calling" when women are running and focus on policy positions.

So here is my pledge...no more comments about Pelosi or Boxer unless it is policy-driven.

VH, Thanks for sharing.

Geraldine Ferraro is a very sensible person; also very fair person and gives credit where due.  Good on her.

Yes, it helps to stay policy focused. If they openly invite reaction with their comment, I have no trouble countering (like Sen.Pelosi saying she is going to win which is a high claim unsupproted by many polls) - that's their explicit invitation for audience/reader reaction.

Yes, I agree. Policy and drivers provide the correct context for sharing our thoughts. Promises to be far more productive.

We all at times type faster to keep up with our thoughts, but who was it you were talking about?

Pelosi herself shared her bravado - saying that she expected to be the Speaker, and I said "No Nancy" and she can reflect on 5/31/08 on long rides between San Fran and Napa Valley.  It is the likely reality.  VH, Nothing targeted at you... :)

[See you all in the evening.]

Sanders, I took no offense at your comment.  I was just teasing you for calling her "Senator" Pelosi.

And you were right about Pelosi saying she fully expects to be Speaker come January.  But in fairness, she is a party leader.  What we she supposed to say?  Yep, we Dems are toast?  hahahaaaaa......actually it would have been refreshing to have heard her tell the truth.

LOL! Ok. Thanks.  Yeah, she could have made more cautiously optimistic statements and that sometimes even helps candidates get their base... if their base is not angry that is. LOL

This was a pre-election article
So, we shall see how it goes.  I hope we dont loose moderates.
