Race VS Gender Stop Comparing them (The New Agenda 10/25/10)

Here is an article that I wrote.

http://thenewagenda.net/2010/10/25/race-vs-gender-stop-comparing-them/

I am fed up with people justifying sexism or comparing the two. Things like saying the N-Word is racist but calling a woman the W-Word is NOT sexist or NOT as bad.

HMG, Very good article. Thanks for sharing.

There is yet another thing.

Pretending these -isms dont exist or are irrelevant is or saying that it is only for the Dems to clean up or care about is really bad.    If it is improved, it helps the entire society.

Viewing backs and Females as STAKEHOLDER groups is how they will get benefits of reformative work and efforts, such as equal opportunity, minimum wage, and equal pay.  That is good politics. That is what politics is supposed to be. What is good for me and my country, at the individual level.

Viewing blacks and females as voter block is BAD politics.  It leads to (its calculated goal of) polarization just to get their votes; it often succeeds because people get so angry that they forget to think in terms of what is truly in their own best interest.

What the aide to Brown did is treat women as a voter block, not as a stakeholder group.  It showed that bad/undesirable behavior and bad motives can be in any group, and it is the respnsibility of the leader to keep the herd following in the path of party's stated planks and goals.

Whenever we see anger being incited, we know that it is politics of polarization, and not a policy-driven matter that comes from the heart. Got to be keyed into good politics.

We did not support candidate Obama just because he is colored. We did not support women just because they were women.  Question is whether they have policy position that are good for the country as well as the stakeholder groups.  Got to be very keyed in on this.

I know how you feel in some way, HMG. I'm gay and when I grow a beard I look like Osama Bin Laden. So I sometimes get slurs of all sorts.

But to me, a slur against either my sexuality or what people perceive me to be ethnically, it's all the same. All equally horrible.

This isn't exactly on the matter of racism vs. sexism, but it is kinda related. It's something I was thinking about the other day in terms of the "Change" argument that was made in 2008, and which was more different from the norm, a black man or a white woman.

I was thinking about it sociologically, and it dawned on me -- in terms of how our society is separated, how difference is defined....women vs men are considered more different than black vs. white. Note for instance, black men and white men share bathrooms, share gym locker rooms etc, but it is on the basis of sex (man vs. woman) that our society is organized.

Biology also lends itself to the argument that men vs women are more different than black vs white. At the genetic level, black men and white men are considered more similar, than say a woman vs a man. Genetically, women have the XX chromosome, whereas all men, whether white or black, have the XY chromosome. The difference is more fundamental between men and women, than it is by race.

I'm not trying to create a hierarchy of difference between either or anything, it was more something I was thinking about in the context of "who really was the change candidate in 2008." People tried to make it all about the fact that black is more different than white, but I think what people overlooked is that "they're all still men."

The true difference, and the real change would have been (if we want to concern ourselves with such silly arbiters of change in the first place) if we had gone from leadership from a man to a woman, because both sociology and biology show that is where the most striking differences are.

Very thought provoking responses.  I wrote that article because I am tired of men a lot of whom are gay making comments on facebook like its OK to be called a whore because it is fun or some other things.
I have had problems all my life because I am the wrong race and the wrong gender and I come from the wrong zip code. Don't ask me to compare them because I can't and I shouldn't.
