Joe Miller: End Federal Minimum Wage, 'Defund Certain Components' of EPA

October 04, 2010 12:01 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports:

Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller was in Washington last week to raise money and meet with some of the same establishment Republicans who supported his opponent in his primary.

But he made clear that he’s not going along to get along in Washington.

In an interview we aired on ABC’s “Top Line” today – conducted for a special Webcast, “The Scoop” with Jonathan Karl and Politico’s Mike Allen -- Miller said there should not be a federal minimum wage, since it’s not a power given to the federal government in the Constitution.

Swell! Remove Federal Minimum Wage... and state will follow suit... and you just pushed another 10 Million people below the poverty line... and yes, that just might stop illegal immigration!

Without the federal minimum wage, which really isn't a living wage at all, but is better than than nothing, there would be more people would be in poverty, more homeless, more tent cities, more hunger, so what was his solution to those problems?

Don't post much anymore here, but will respond to this as this article is a clear propaganda piece filled with typical misinformation and snipets taken out of context.

To clarify, Joe Miller actually said this:

He said in the interview that minimum wage standards were "clearly up to the states" and that regulation of those rates was "not within the scope of the powers that are given to the federal government." "The state of Alaska has a minimum wage which is higher than the federal level because our state leaders have made that determination," Miller said. "The minimum level again should be the state's decision."

Which means, he wants to leave it up to the states to decide upon what the minimum wage should be and it is not in the scope of the federal government to set a minimim wage.  Sounds like a very good idea and has my support.

He is absolute NOT advocating abolishing the minimum wage.  He is saying leave it up to the states.  Period.

So, contrary to what this article states, it does not mean Miller is against a minimum wage.  I am so tired of far-left wing propaganda taking words out of context that totally mis-leads the public.  The  article is written and readers believe it without doing due diligence in research and that is how the fear-mongering rumours are spread.

Just setting the record straight on this one.  Miller is a Constitutionalist and that is what America needs now. The truth is that each individual state, by way of the Constitution, is supposed to have more power than the combined power of the federal government.

Source for quoted bolded material:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20018474-503544.html

and, the same quote also appears at the originally sourced site also, but was not included.  And, this is why "Context Matters".

And, by reading the comments made on the article, a vast majority of people only read the headline and jumped to the incorrect conclusion that Miller wants to end minimum wage, without reading the entire story.  People will read a headline and assume it is the truth without reading the ENTIRE article.

Sorry Calico, it doesn't wash. Obviously states already have the power to raise minimum wage, since by Miller's own words, Alaska has already done it. They won't. States could already raise it to a living wage now, and if they won't, there needs to be a federal mandate to level the playing field. When states refuse to act for the betterment of the people, its not enough to say "vote them out". Too many businesses and corporations have an interest in keeping wages low. There is a need for a federal safety net.
