Disgruntled Democrats join the Tea Party (CNN 4/2/10)

They drank the Kool-Aid and now they want a cup o'tea...

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/04/02/democrats.tea.party/

They are not typical Tea Party activists: A woman who voted for President Obama and believes he's a "phenomenal speaker." Another who said she was a "knee-jerk, bleeding heart liberal."

These two women are not alone.

Some Americans who say they have been sympathetic to Democratic causes in the past -- some even voted for Democratic candidates -- are angry with President Obama and his party. They say they are now supporting the Tea Party -- a movement that champions less government, lower taxes and the defeat of Democrats even though it's not formally aligned with the Republican Party.

To be sure, the number of Democrats in the Tea Party movement is small. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows that while 96 percent of Tea Party activists identify themselves as either Republican or Independent, only 4 percent say they are Democrats.

Roxanne Lewis expressed a similar point of view. A small business owner in Grand Junction, Lewis described herself as a lifelong Democrat and called the president a "phenomenal speaker." She voted for him because she "believed in what he was saying: change."

But, Lewis added, "I should've listened a lot closer when he talked about 'spreading the wealth.' "

Asked how she feels about having voted for the president, Lewis said "I feel lied to, cheated and raped."

Lewis criticized the taxpayer-funded bailouts of financial institutions, which began under former President George W. Bush, and the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler.

"These are not the Democrats that I have been brought up with," Lewis said. However, she said she will continue to be a Democrat.

Gee, ya think she ought to think about voting for Hillary in 2012? Just an idea...

David Saucedo is a rapper and community activist who frequently appears at Tea Party rallies. Using the stage name "Polatik," he performs rap songs that slam President Obama and the Democrats.

Though he eventually voted for GOP Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, he said he was initially impressed with the president.

Now Saucedo has turned into an Obama critic. "A lot of the things he says sound good, until you look at the consequences of what they will do on the long term."

Saucedo also said that most of his family voted for the president but now support the Tea Party. He said his sister in law's views sum up the family sentiment.

"She regrets voting for Barack Obama," he said.

I wonder how many are saying "If Only we had voted for Hillary" - we would have had Public Option -- Hillary would have been a lot more persuasive a lot earlier and public option would have passed sooner -- and it would have been received very differently.

There would be no public option under Clinton.  She knows more then anyone else how this issue is unpopular.  Its time we remind all polititcans they are to do ONLY WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS.   She wouldn't have touched this with a ten foot pool.  This is how she made sure BO was a one term President.  She knows that if it passes its over for him and the Dems.  She got her revenge by pretending she was for health care reform.  I do believe she would have worked on it gradually which is the way to go.  I do not think she would have touched a big contravolted program like this one.  Its funny that BO and the other Democrats are so stupid that they led themselves to slaughter.
NOTE to LIberals you are not most of the population you are a tiny minority and because of this you need to find another issue rather then health care reform.  NO ONE WANTS REFORM they think the Gov. will only make it worse and I agree.
This bill is so bad that I now don't want any reform and that is a shame because the insurrance companies do need to be reformed that is who needs to be reformed and this disaster just puts people in jail and lets the company to get away with it.
Yes I believe Hillary used this issue to get revenge on all the dirty dealings that went on.  She is not perfect and she will hit back when she is hit hard.
Its time the Liberals either realise that no one but other Liberals agree with them the better off we will all be.

Maybe the Tea Party leaders will recognize the opportunity to develop a broad coalition of people who put principle and country before party. It would be nice to see a PUMA group within the Tea Party - if the party is a centrist movement.

At the onset of TEA party when it was supposed to be about taxes, I considered going to a meeting.  I made some phonecalls and felt that it may be reasonable place to join.. BUT I had a gut feeling about the movement that has since come true.

The group is really FAR RIGHT.. Much more so than the Republican party as a whole.

Yes, there are some Dems in the movement - mostly people who initially questioned if Obama on eligibility grounds.

And, there are some Dems in the movement who choose to believe that the movement is still not partisan.

But the fact is it has been co-opted almost completely.

Moreover, it has gained some negative energy with non-peaceful demonstrations.

Peaceful demonstrations combined with powerful pen go much farther.

Interesting article Jen. I'm kinda surprised CNN mentioned this. Further, despite malinformed personal conjecture that is rife with fallacious leaps of logic, it appears that actual analysis shows that 4 out of 10 Tea Partiers aren't even right wing Republicans. From The Hill....

bg_headhill.jpg

Survey: Four in 10 Tea Party members are Dems or independents

"Four in 10 Tea Party members are either Democrats or Independents, according to a new national survey.

The findings provide one of the most detailed portraits to date of the grassroots movement that started last year.

The national breakdown of the Tea Party composition is 57 percent Republican, 28 percent Independent and 13 percent Democratic, according to three national polls by the Winston Group, a Republican-leaning firm that conducted the surveys on behalf of an education advocacy group.

Two-thirds of the group call themselves conservative, 26 are moderate and 8 percent say they are liberal. The Winston Group conducted three national telephone surveys of 1,000 registered voters between December and February. Of those polled, 17 percent – more than 500 people -- said they were “part of the Tea Party movement.”

“It’s a good sample size,” said David Winston, the polling firm’s director. “It will certainly give us an initial base to follow where these folks are.”

The group is united around two issues – the economy/jobs and reducing the deficit. They believe that cutting spending is the key to job creation and favor tax cuts as the best way to stimulate the economy. That said 61 percent of Tea Party members believe infrastructure spending creates jobs. Moreover, given the choice Tea Party members favor 63-32 reducing unemployment to 5 percent over balancing the budget. "

Complete article at link.....

~30% of Tea Partiers are moderates?!? ~15% are Democrats? Like I said, you won't have known it from the brainless repetition of BOT talking points such as "Tea Partiers are all FAR RIGHT racists!"
