Nearly 2 Decades In Prison for Selling Crack Cocaine (WWMT 2/25/10)

He is not charged with any crime other then selling 50 grams of crack.  He wasn't a major supplier or he would have gotten caught with more.
Rape will get you 10 years tops if you even get that much time.
Murder actually can also get you less time then selling crack.
The entire point of making this law so tough is racist.  Its racist because the majority of people selling crack is Africian American or Latino.
Its time to overthrow these barbariac laws

Damn Right, hmg. And in some states, child molestation will just get you run out of town - to the next one over. No trial, no time served.

The drug prosecutions are so over the top - especially when the users or small time pushers are involved. Such a waste of both human potential and state money to incarcerate these individuals for most of their lives for NON-VIOLENT crimes. Something else I learned recently just made me sick - It is legal in some states (maybe all - I don't know) for law enforcement and prosecutors to keep video tapes of users buying drugs, for three years, before charging the buyer with a crime. This effectively renders useless the Three Strikes law. When law enforcement officers don't arrest the person buying drugs, and just save up the recordings, the individual may have purchased drugs several times before even being aware that law enforcement has the taped evidence. Then, when the case is finally presented to grand jury, the individual may be indicted for many individual counts of illegal possession. So, in one court hearing, there may be four, five, six, and on and on convictions - even though the person has never been arrested, indicted, convicted of a single crime prior to that one court trial. I think that totally violates the spirit of the law, as well as the human and civil rights of Americans.

Reform is badly needed in terms of drug crimes.

This issue is most defiantly in the best interest of women's groups. Once these groups realize that you get more time for selling your girlfriend crack then you do raping her or killing.  Rape sentencing laws need to be expanded and most of the three strikes laws as well as Rockerfeller laws need to go bye-bye

Makes you wonder if they are just trying to support the Court System and keep it going.

I think there is a definite component of classism and racism going on in the justice system - as there has always been. If there is not a large quantity of drugs and an act of violence was not committed, I fail to see the value of incarcerating drug offenders for years on end. One exception to that may be crystal meth. I live in a rural state, and meth is a huge problem. The problem is less with the people who use it than with those who manufacture it. Trouble is, most people who use also seem to manufacture it. I've seen many cases of children having been removed from homes in which the parents were cooking crystal meth. The fumes are terribly toxic, and kids have had internal and external burns from being present when it's cooked. Obviously, strong measures are needed to ensure that this does not happen.
