Palin Family Discovers Acceptable Television Program

Posted by James Poniewozik Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Fresh off her mother's battles with David Letterman and Family Guy, Bristol Palin will make her TV-drama debut in season 3 of ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager next summer. The show, now in its second season, follows a single teen mom who got pregnant in a regrettable fling at band camp. (I had no idea in high school so much was going on at band camp.) Palin will play herself, befriending the lead character, Amy, at a music program for teen moms.

Since her mom's elevation to vice-presidential candidate led her to have the most public teen-pregnancy admission ever, Palin has staked out a niche as a celebrity spokesperson for abstinence. This despite her earlier comments that asking teens to be abstinent is not realistic, and also despite her being the most famous living proof of that statement. (Palin later claimed that "not realistic" comment was taken out of context; you be the judge.)

And then there's the whole business about her influential mom being anti-choice on abortion, while publicly playing up the "choice" both Bristol and Sarah Palin made to keep their babies. (Sarah Palin, by the way, will be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tuesday.) In any case, Palin has also made a point of saying that teen motherhood isn't glamorous, which squares with the attitude toward it that American Teenager takes.

Speaking of American Teenager, I didn't much like the show when it debuted, because the early episodes had a melodramtic afterschool-special tone to them—they were like the Reefer Madness of teen sex—but people whose taste I generally trust have told me it's improved since. Are any Tuned Inlanders watching it? And is Bristol Palin going to make you more or less likely to?

Excerpts from the ABC Family release:

Bristol Palin, eldest daughter of former Alaskan Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, will make her acting debut on ABC Family's hit original drama series, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” The episode will shoot in Los Angeles and air this summer when the series returns for its third season on ABC Family.

Said Executive Producer Brenda Hampton: "Bristol Palin is the most famous teenage mother in America. We're thrilled to have her join us, and I think she will bring additional attention to the issues facing teen parents that we've been exploring for a couple of seasons now.”

"I am thrilled to be on this show and to be a part of a program that educates teens and young adults about the consequences of teen pregnancy,” said Palin from her home in Anchorage, Alaska.

Palin will be playing herself, as one of Amy's (Shailene Woodley) friends at a music program for teen mothers.

There was a small reference to this on Greta's show tonight on Fox News as well and I went looking for further info...

This just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Politicians' kids are different from the children of other famous people. I think the politicians who keep their kids out of the spotlight-- and the kids-over-18 who keep themselves out of the spotlight-- are making the right choice. And I can already see how this is going to play out. Bristol will appear on the show, the lefty pundits and late-night comedians will skewer her, and then Sarah will launch another "poor me, the media is so mean to my family" campaign.

I think that this could be a good idea because Bristol is a teen mom and yes we exist. I was a teen mom and its very hard because your still a teenager and you still want to do teenage things but your a mom and the baby comes first. Its not glamorous and young teenage girls need to learn that.

I think you would be right if it were a teenage girl who faced real problems.  Like can't get a babysister to go to school college, can't afford to buy pamers pay rent with minimum job, but Bristol palin doesn't fit that.  I am sure Sarah is taking care of her grandchild and helping  bristol out and bristol's child wants for nothing.  My mom was a teenage mom at 17 and her mom couldn't help her out she had to navigate that alone, while bristol maybe young emotionally as far as carining for her child, she has none of the economic concerns that many teenage moms have.  If this is what she want's to do fine, but I hope she tells her mom not to cry foul when the media goes after her.

Yes, and of course Palins know this is so.

So, it makes it a money-making endeavor for the Palins.  A movie.  They are using the mother and the daughter's stories to make more money.

Totally agree with you.

If she is going by all publicity is good publicity, I would say, no, that is not so for someone who has a long pit to dig themselves out of.

I was surprised that someone wanting to be a candidate if there is a door that might open is letting this happen.

Bristol Palin to Play Self on 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager'

By PATRICK GAVIN | 2/23/10 8:52 AM EST

In the public eye, Bristol Palin is many things: teenager, daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, mother to Tripp and one-time girlfriend to Levi Johnston. And now she is adding actress to the mix.

Palin will star on ABC's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," the network announced Tuesday. Palin, who will play herself, hopes that her appearance will encourage others to practice abstinence.

More . . .

I have returned this thread.
I have to disagree that Sarah had anything to do with her daughter's decision to do this. Bristol is 18 almost 19 and kids that age are grown and have no problem letting everyone know this.
Sarah promoting her own baby I can see keeping him out of the public eye if he were a normal child.  He is a baby right now and could care less about what others think.  He has Downs and since people tend to want these children hidden away I am glad that Sarah is doing this.
The attacks that Sarah complained about were out of bounds.  I am sure Bristol knows what she is doing.  There is nothing wrong with what she did and if she wants to go on TV and perhaps help another teen then what is the problem. She is an adult and no longer a child.
I am pretty sure Sarah is not exploitng her children anymore then Hllary did during the Primary. Hillary wasn't pimping out Chelsea and Sarah isn't pimping out her children

Sorry, I dont think Sarah Palin is causing it to happen, but parents do have a lot of control on their children even when they are "old enough" especially when they are financially relatively reliant on their parents. I dont think it is good for her to have this happen and the topic constantly remain in the forefront.  I was viewing it from the viewpoint of IMPACT on her prospects.

As for Bristol, it is a good opportunity to break into the film industry as well to make her statement on the topic as she has done before.  It will be interesting if she wins an Emmy. She is quite good looking and has good camera presence.
