With 'Game Change'... (Cleveland Plain Dealer 1/24/10)

With 'Game Change', Heilemann & Halperin give the 2008 presidential election an angry, profane, & gossipy gloss:

http://www.cleveland.com/books/index.ssf/2010/01/with_game_change_john_heileman.html

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, quoted on page 255, assured an embattled Hillary Clinton that "no one has a right to push you out of this race." His staff confirmed this week that the authors interviewed Strickland in person last year. And that the governor was quoted accurately.

Strickland made Clinton's shortlist of four potential vice presidents; she began preparing for her transition to president 18 months before the vote. We also learn that John McCain and Hillary Clinton did vodka shots together; that in an airport parking lot Elizabeth Edwards ripped her blouse open and screamed "Look at me!" at her husband, crazed over the National Enquirer report of his infidelity.

It made me wonder what Abigail Adams might say about the savagery of our entertainments, for "Game Change" is an entertainment, ringing with schadenfreude.

I wouldn't want a return to the hushed reverence that once characterized the stories Time printed about John F. Kennedy, sanitized of his sexual dalliances and shaky health.

But "Game Change" feels like the other extreme, our leaders as a circus ring of lunatics.

We have truly made our President and Congress tabloid folder.  Its terrible.  Every week there is a pic of Obama who is having marriage problems and also an affair with Oprah here these people tell it.  Obama and Oprah are more then likely both gay.

Yeap I took a glance at the cover of enquierer  all the gossip about marriage problems with the obama's michelle's jealousy over Oprah and Obama's right hand mand Reggie Love hmmmm.  The stupid MSM gave the enquierer an air of legitimacy when they ignored the edwards scandal and the enqierer busted it open.

We have to take our truth where we can get it!  I'd rather know that not know, even if it's painful.winkevileye

There is a dramatic lowering of the office of POTUS.. It started with poor behavior during the campaign days.. personal politics, talking down about the opponent, jeering, birdflips... When that happens, it carries right through to the office. We saw it continuing on the trail for Martha Coakley.

The writers have clued into that and have fed it to the masses, adding their own flare.
The only confirmation the article quotes is a positive story... The book is trash and I hope it sees a quick demise.

Most definately.  People may buy it or not.  I don't see anyone buying it except for us Political junkies.
